Socialite Discord Laravel Package

revolution/socialite-discord

Discord OAuth2 provider for Laravel Socialite. Adds Discord login to your Laravel app with a simple driver: install the package, add your Discord client ID and secret, then use Socialite::driver('discord') to authenticate users and retrieve their Discord profile.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Gating a "Sign in with Discord" feature: This package is the smallest viable path to adding Discord as an OAuth identity provider in a Laravel app. It answers the build-vs-buy question for that one feature: buy (adopt) is defensible because the driver is a thin mapping layer over Socialite's existing AbstractProvider contract — the integration surface is small, and the code is MIT-licensed and readable in an afternoon.
  • Community/gaming-adjacent roadmaps: Relevant if your user base lives in Discord — gaming, creator tools, community platforms, bot dashboards, or any product where Discord guild membership or role data could later inform entitlements. Login is the wedge; role-based access is the follow-on roadmap item.
  • Reducing onboarding friction for a specific cohort: Supports a decision to offer an alternative auth path for users who resent yet another password, without committing to a full identity-provider migration (Auth0, Clerk, WorkOS). It slots into existing Socialite users tables and controller patterns with near-zero architectural change.
  • Not a platform decision: This does not support build-vs-buy on identity infrastructure, SSO, or enterprise auth. It is a single-provider adapter, not an identity strategy.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are already on Laravel + Socialite and want Discord alongside existing providers with minimal code.
  • Discord login is a secondary auth option, not the sole path — the blast radius of the package going stale is one button.
  • You are time-boxed and the alternative is a custom AbstractProvider subclass you would have to write, test, and maintain yourself.
  • You are comfortable vendoring: at ~8 stars and 0 dependents, treat this as source you are adopting, not a dependency you are trusting. Fork it internally, pin it, and own the 60–100 lines.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house) when:

  • You need anything beyond read scopes — guild membership, role sync, bot-adjacent flows — where a maintained Discord SDK is a better fit.
  • Your team has a policy against dependencies with low adoption and no visible maintenance cadence. That policy is reasonable here; the escape hatch (write the provider yourself) is cheap.
  • A better-supported community driver already exists for Discord — the SocialiteProviders ecosystem is the obvious comparison, and it carries far more usage signal. Evaluate it first and prefer it if it covers your scopes.
  • You need SLA, security disclosure process, or vendor support. Nothing about an 8-star, 0-dependent package implies that.

Risk note for the record: low stars and zero dependents are not quality signals, they are bus-factor signals. The mitigation is cheap — vendor the code, add a test around the token exchange, and you have removed the dependency risk entirely.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: We can ship "Sign in with Discord" in days rather than a sprint, at effectively zero licensing cost (MIT) and with no new vendor relationship. The strategic value is audience acquisition in Discord-native communities, not infrastructure. The tradeoff is maintenance risk on an unmaintained-looking library — which we neutralise by copying the small amount of code we need into our own codebase rather than depending on it. Net: low cost, low commitment, reversible in an afternoon.

To engineering: This is a small AbstractProvider implementation for Socialite — no new runtime dependencies beyond Socialite itself, no database or config changes beyond a service entry, and it conforms to the same contract as our existing providers. Recommended handling: evaluate the SocialiteProviders community driver first as the lower-risk default; if we go with this one, vendor it, pin the version, and add an integration test covering the token exchange and user mapping so a future Laravel/Socialite upgrade surfaces breakage in CI rather than production. Scope assumption: identify-level login only — anything involving guilds or roles should be treated as separate work with a purpose-built Discord client.
