Sail Db Backup Laravel Package

revolution/sail-db-backup

A Laravel package for backing up and restoring databases in projects using Laravel Sail. It provides convenient Artisan commands for creating and managing database dumps without extra tooling.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Developer onboarding and environment parity. The package codifies "dump the Sail database / restore a known-good snapshot" into repeatable commands, so new engineers, QA, and contractors don't rely on tribal knowledge or hand-run mysqldump incantations. This is a DevEx lever, not a customer-facing feature.
  • Release and demo readiness. PMs and QA can capture a known-good local dataset before a risky migration, schema change, or stakeholder demo, then roll back quickly. That supports go/no-go decisions on "can we safely show this Friday" without touching shared or production data.
  • Build vs. buy for internal tooling. This is a thin wrapper around the database client inside Sail's containers. The real decision is "codify a ~20-line script vs. adopt a package" — and because it's MIT with a near-zero integration cost, both options are cheap. Treat adoption as a convenience decision, not an architecture decision.
  • Roadmap scoping / boundary setting. It's a useful reminder that local backup/restore is a development-environment concern. It should keep "data protection" off the product backlog and routed to platform/DevOps, where production backup (scheduling, offsite, encryption, retention, PITR) actually lives.
  • Not a signal for production architecture. With 7 stars, 0 dependents, and a last release in March 2024, adoption data here says nothing about the reliability of your production data strategy. Don't let it influence those decisions.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • Your team standardizes on Laravel Sail as the primary local environment.
  • You need repeatable local DB snapshot/restore for onboarding, QA handoffs, demos, or pre-migration safety.
  • The blast radius is dev-only, the team is small, and you're comfortable with single-maintainer dependencies in require-dev.
  • You want a reference implementation to fork or copy rather than a supported dependency.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need production backups — use spatie/laravel-backup, managed-database snapshots/PITR, or your cloud provider's native tooling. This package is not that.
  • You are not on Sail (plain Docker Compose, Herd, DDEV, Valet) — the wrapper's value largely evaporates.
  • You need scheduling, offsite storage, encryption, retention policy, or audit/compliance guarantees.
  • You need CI-integrated fixture/seed generation rather than local dumps.
  • Your org requires maintained, supported dependencies with a track record. With zero dependents and no release in over a year, verify compatibility with your current Sail/Laravel version before committing, and have a fork-or-replicate fallback ready.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A zero-cost, dev-only utility that shortens environment setup and makes demos and migrations safer to rehearse. It carries no production data risk, no procurement, and no customer-facing surface. Worst case, it's replaced by a small internal script. Fund it with attention, not budget.

To engineering: A thin convenience wrapper around Sail's database dump/restore. Evaluate it against a homegrown script, install it as a dev dependency with a pinned version, and document the manual fallback. The main risk is maintenance — single maintainer, low adoption, last release March 2024 — which we mitigate by forking or replicating the behavior if it drifts from current Sail.

Bottom line for the PM: This is a developer-productivity micro-tool, not a product capability. Adopt it if you're a Sail shop and want faster onboarding and safer local rehearsals; ignore it for anything resembling a backup strategy. Low upside, low risk, low relevance to the roadmap.
