Laravel Beyond Laravel Package

regnerisch/laravel-beyond

Laravel Beyond adds Artisan generators and base classes for action-oriented Laravel apps, including Actions, Data Transfer Objects, and View Models. It helps organize domain logic and move beyond traditional CRUD structure.

Technical Evaluation

This is the first formal assessment for this package; it is derived from the v7.1.0 release notes alone, since no prior assessment or dependency data exists in the record. The package is a Laravel-oriented developer tooling library that ships an Artisan command namespace (beyond:make:adr-action) alongside framework version constraints, which places it in the "low-runtime-footprint, high-version-churn" category of Composer dependencies.

Architecture fit. The package integrates at the console/kernel layer rather than the request lifecycle: a service provider registers an Artisan command, and the command scaffolds files (ADR actions) into the application or repository. That is an additive, opt-in surface — it does not intercept routing, persistence, or queue behavior, so it does not constrain application architecture. It is best classified as a developer-experience/build-time dependency, and should be required with --dev unless the generated artifacts are consumed at runtime.

Integration feasibility. High. Standard composer require plus Laravel package auto-discovery, with a likely vendor:publish step for stubs/config. The only material gate is the framework constraint: v7.1.0 adds Laravel 12.x and removes Laravel 10.x. Any application or CI job still on Laravel 10 cannot resolve 7.1.x and must either stay pinned to the last 7.0.x release or complete its framework upgrade first. Because this is a minor version (7.1.0) carrying a support-matrix removal, the effective compatibility window for the 7.x line is now roughly Laravel 11–12; that should be verified against composer.json rather than assumed from release notes.

Technical risk. Moderate but well-contained. Three exposures: (1) a fast major-version cadence — the package is already at v7, implying frequent majors and corresponding upgrade chores; (2) single-maintainer concentration (both changes are attributed to one contributor), which is a bus-factor and longevity risk for a tool embedded in engineering workflow; (3) constraint collisions on illuminate/console/illuminate/support with other dev tooling (static analysis, test generators, IDE helpers) that also pin framework ranges. The blast radius of a failure is limited to developer tooling and CI, not production traffic.

Key questions.

  • What exactly does beyond:make:adr-action generate, and is it a stub generator, a runtime action class, or both?
  • Is the package intended as require-dev only, and are its generated artifacts committed to source?
  • What is the minimum PHP version for 7.1.0, and did it change?
  • Is the 7.0.x line still receiving security/compatibility patches for Laravel 10 consumers, or is it effectively end-of-life?
  • Does the generated ADR file format/numbering scheme remain stable across 6.x → 7.x, or do upgrades require regenerating or migrating existing records?
  • Is the command namespace (beyond:) at risk of collision with other installed packages?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. Assumes a Laravel 11 or 12 application on a modern PHP 8.x runtime with Composer 2. The package sits in the dev-tooling layer next to PHPUnit/Pest, Pint, PHPStan/Larastan, and IDE helpers. Fit is clean for greenfield services and for any estate that has already completed the Laravel 11/12 migration; it is a non-starter for services deliberately held on Laravel 10.

Migration path. Treat this as a compatibility-gated adoption, not a drop-in bump:

  1. Inventory every application and CI image by Laravel major version (composer show laravel/framework across repos).
  2. For Laravel 10 consumers, pin explicitly to the last 7.0.x release and record an expiry date tied to the framework upgrade backlog — do not allow a floating ^7.0 constraint to silently strand them.
  3. For Laravel 11/12 consumers, upgrade the framework first, then bump the package, so that any resolution failure is unambiguously attributable.
  4. Use composer why-not <vendor>/<package> 7.1.0 to surface conflicting constraints before merging, rather than diagnosing after a red build.
  5. Re-publish stubs/config after the bump and diff against the committed versions to catch template drift.

Compatibility. Two axes to validate: the framework constraint (L11/L12, L10 removed) and the generated-output contract. The second is the one teams underestimate — if make:adr-action output is committed and referenced by convention (numbering, index files, links), a stub change is a soft breaking change for reviewers and tooling even though SemVer calls it a minor. Also confirm the command does not clash with an existing ADR toolchain already in the repo (e.g. adr-tools, or hand-maintained docs/adr).

Sequencing. Pin-and-freeze for L10 → framework upgrade → package bump → stub re-publish and diff → CI matrix update to include the L12 job and drop the L10 job → documentation update for the new make:adr-action command and any ADR conventions it implies. The CI matrix change should land in the same PR as the version bump so the support window is enforced mechanically rather than remembered.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Low absolute effort, non-zero cadence. Expect a meaningful upgrade every few quarters driven by Laravel's annual major releases plus this package's own major bumps. Budget a recurring half-day per year per repo for the version bump and stub diff, plus a one-off sweep now to reconcile L10 consumers. Single-maintainer concentration warrants a note in the dependency register and a fallback plan (the package is small; forking or vendoring the command is a realistic exit if it is abandoned).

Support. Because this is build-time tooling, incidents are developer-facing, not customer-facing. On-call rotations and SLOs are unaffected; a broken install degrades to "engineers cannot scaffold ADRs," which is an annoyance rather than an outage. Support ownership should sit with the platform/developer-experience group, not application on-call.

Scaling. Runtime scaling is a non-issue — the command executes rarely and does no I/O beyond writing files. The real scaling dimension is repository growth: ADR artifacts accumulate, numbering collides across parallel branches, and index files become merge-conflict hotspots. Mitigations are process-level (reserve number ranges per branch, or generate from a monotonically increasing source), not package-level, and should be decided before broad rollout rather than after the first conflict storm.

Failure modes. (1) Composer resolution failure on Laravel 10 apps after a floating constraint pulls 7.1.0 — mitigate with explicit pins and a lockfile-check job. (2) Command not registered where package auto-discovery is disabled — mitigate with a documented manual provider registration. (3) Stub drift after upgrade producing inconsistent ADR formats within one repo — mitigate with the diff-on-bump step. (4) Namespace collision with another beyond: command provider. (5) Silent abandonment upstream — mitigate with the fork/vendor contingency above.

Ramp-up. Negligible for engineers already fluent in Artisan: under an hour to install, publish, and generate a first artifact. The larger cost is social, not technical — agreeing on what an "ADR action" is, where files live, and who approves them. Plan a short written convention doc and a walkthrough for the team; that document, not the package, is what determines whether adoption sticks.
