Nova Icons Laravel Package

reedware/nova-icons

Adds icon support to Laravel Nova, letting you display icons alongside resources, fields, and navigation items so your admin panel is easier to scan at a glance. Lightweight and simple to configure in any Nova application.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UI iconography standards — informs whether to rely on Nova's built-in <icon> component versus vendoring supplementary Vue icon components. The existence of a third-party package here signals a perceived gap between Nova's shipped icon set and what product/design wants (brand icons, custom SVG sets, per-domain iconography).
  • Build vs. buy for internal admin tooling — a zero-dependency, MIT-licensed set of presentational components is cheap to fork. The decision is less "adopt this" and more "extract the component pattern into our own repo" if we need a curated icon layer in Nova.
  • Dependency policy for the admin surface — useful as a concrete test case for a broader rule: how much unmaintained, low-traction surface area are we willing to carry inside a paid, vendor-controlled framework? Nova upgrades are already a forcing function; piling fragile Vue components on top raises upgrade cost without proportional user value.
  • Roadmap sequencing for admin UX — if icon polish is on the roadmap, this package is a signal that the work is small and self-contained. It should be scoped as a design-system task (icon inventory + a local component), not a vendor-evaluation task.
  • Ecosystem health input — 0 stars, 0 dependents, single release in 2020. This is not a strategic dependency; it's an artifact. It should not appear on a build/buy matrix as a serious option.

When to Consider This Package

Consider only if:

  • You are on a legacy Nova line that predates or lacks the icon coverage you need, and you have already confirmed compatibility with your exact Nova/Vue version.
  • You need a reference implementation for how to wire icon Vue components into Nova — read it, then copy the pattern into your own codebase under your own maintenance.
  • Your team accepts the maintenance: pin the version, audit the source (it's small and MIT), and treat it as vendored code with an internal owner.
  • Icon rendering is purely cosmetic and non-critical — a broken icon must never block an admin workflow.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You are on Nova 4+ (Vue 3) or plan to upgrade — a 2020-era Vue component package is a predictable breakage point, and the upgrade path is yours to build.
  • You require an actively maintained dependency, security advisory coverage, or a maintainer to respond to issues. There is no release cadence and effectively no user base to surface regressions.
  • You need accessibility guarantees (labels, ARIA, meaningful markup), tree-shaking, or an icon pipeline tied to a design system. Use a maintained icon library (Heroicons, Blade Icons, Font Awesome) and render through Nova's native component.
  • Your org gates third-party code on stars/dependents/maintenance signals — this fails on all three.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a tiny, unmaintained, zero-adoption add-on for Laravel Nova's admin interface. It solves a cosmetic problem and introduces a maintenance and upgrade liability inside a framework we already pay for. Recommendation: do not adopt. If icon consistency in the admin panel matters, fund a small, owned design-system component (a few days of engineering) rather than taking on an orphaned dependency. There is no strategic upside and a real, if modest, upgrade tax.

To engineering: Treat reedware/nova-icons as a pattern reference, not a dependency. It's an MIT-licensed set of Vue icon components for Nova, last touched in September 2020 with no releases since and no downstream users — meaning no one is absorbing the upgrade pain for us. It is almost certainly incompatible with current Nova/Vue versions, so any adoption means forking and owning it. The cost of writing our own icon component wrapper — with a defined icon inventory, accessibility attributes, and a single place to swap icon sets — is lower than the cost of carrying and eventually migrating someone else's abandoned code. If a team wants icons beyond Nova's built-in set, scope it as an internal component under our own repo and release process.
