Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy. A v1.0.0 initial release is the first point at which a Laravel/PHP dependency is defensible in a production roadmap: the maintainers are asserting a stable public API under SemVer. Pre-1.0, every minor bump can break you; at 1.0 you can plan upgrades on a calendar instead of reacting to them.
  • Roadmap deferral. If the package covers a capability already sitting on your backlog, adoption converts a multi-sprint build into an integration task. The right comparison is not "build cost vs. install cost" but "build cost vs. integration cost plus transferred maintenance burden."
  • Feature scoping. A declared-stable API surface lets product commit to downstream user-facing behavior without renegotiating scope on every upstream release.
  • Risk register entry. Initial releases concentrate risk — thin docs, unproven upgrade path, frequently a single maintainer. That's a decision input to price in, not an automatic blocker.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • The capability it provides is non-differentiating (auth plumbing, payments glue, admin scaffolding, integrations) — work you'd otherwise fund but that no customer buys you for.
  • It is Laravel-idiomatic: service provider registration, publishable config, Eloquent/facade conventions. Onboarding cost stays low and the team's existing knowledge transfers.
  • The 1.0 surface covers your near-term needs. You are buying what ships today, not a roadmap promise.
  • Your Laravel and PHP versions are inside its support matrix and the dependency graph resolves cleanly against your existing constraints.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The package touches a core differentiator, or you need to control its internals.
  • You require a track record — there is no 1.x patch history yet, so the upgrade path and maintainer responsiveness are unproven.
  • License terms, security posture, or maintainer sustainability fail your dependency policy.
  • The integration would require forking or patching upstream, which converts a buy decision back into an unowned build decision.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A Laravel package reaching v1.0.0 gives us a stable API contract we can plan around, letting us buy rather than build a non-core capability and redirect engineering time to differentiators. The trade-off is concentrated dependency risk in a young project; we contain it by pinning versions and keeping an abstraction seam so we can swap out later.

To engineering: It follows Laravel conventions, so integration will feel familiar and review will be fast. Treat 1.0.0 as stable but unproven: pin the version constraint, wrap the integration behind our own interface rather than calling it directly from domain code, and budget a short spike to validate upgrading from 1.0.x to 1.1 before we put it on a critical path.
