Laravel Notification Preview Laravel Package

pxlrbt/laravel-notification-preview

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Lifecycle messaging inventory and audit. The package exposes every notification and mailable class in the app through a single browsable route. Before committing roadmap capacity to a "transactional messaging overhaul," use it as a zero-cost discovery tool: point it at the codebase, enumerate what actually exists across mail, database, and broadcast channels, and turn an unknown surface area into a countable list. That list is what you estimate against.
  • Content and copy iteration velocity. Rendered mail as HTML and text, plus raw payloads for other channels, collapses the design-review loop from "trigger a real send, wait for inbox, screenshot, repeat" to "reload the page." That is a measurable reduction in cycle time for any workstream where copy or template changes are the bottleneck — onboarding sequences, receipt emails, notification-heavy product surfaces.
  • A review gate for non-engineers. Legal, compliance, brand, and localization reviewers can inspect actual rendered output without a staging account, an inbox, or an engineering babysitter. This is the difference between "review happens at the end of the sprint" and "review happens during the sprint." It is also the cheapest way to catch missing unsubscribe footers, expired legal disclaimers, and broken localization before a send reaches a customer.
  • Channel strategy decisions. Because it surfaces mail, database, and broadcast payloads side by side, it makes the content of each channel legible during roadmap debates about which channels to invest in. Deciding whether to add push or SMS becomes a discussion about payload shape and effort rather than an abstraction.
  • Build vs. buy, scoped correctly. This is developer tooling, not customer-facing infrastructure. The build alternative is an internal preview route plus a template — a few days of engineering and then permanent maintenance through every Laravel major. Buying here is defensible precisely because the feature is small, the blast radius is zero, and the maintenance cost of owning it is disproportionate to its value.
  • Local/staging cost reduction. Teams paying for a transactional email provider or a staging inbox service for template iteration can shift that loop to a local route. Minor, but real for high-churn messaging work.
  • New-engineer onboarding. "Browse every notification we send" is a materially better first-week artifact than a wiki page that was last accurate two quarters ago.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are on Laravel and have more than a handful of notification or mailable classes. Below roughly five, the preview route costs more attention than it saves.
  • Notification templates change regularly — copy edits, design refreshes, new locales. Churn is what makes a preview loop pay for itself.
  • Non-engineering stakeholders review customer-facing messaging. Legal, brand, and localization review is where the ROI is clearest and least substitutable.
  • You support multiple channels. The mail-plus-payload view is the differentiator; if you only send mail, Laravel's own mail preview and a local mail catcher already cover much of the ground.
  • You are comfortable with a small, single-maintainer dependency. Keep it as a require-dev dependency, pin the version, and treat the route as a non-production surface.
  • You need a fast decision, not a strategic bet. The integration cost is a config publish and a middleware review. That is a spike-sized commitment, not an architecture decision.

Look elsewhere, or build, when:

  • You are not on Laravel, or you have standardized on a third-party template platform (Braze, Customer.io, SendGrid templates). The package previews Laravel-rendered output and cannot tell you anything about a vendor-hosted template.
  • Your real problem is deliverability, rendering across clients, or send analytics. This shows you Blade output in a browser tab. It does not tell you how Gmail clips it, whether it lands in spam, or whether the send succeeded. Pair it with a rendering/deliverability tool or accept the gap explicitly.
  • You need visual editing. This is a previewer, not a builder. If the ask is "let marketing edit templates," this is the wrong category of tool.
  • You need an access-control or audit story that satisfies security review out of the box. It ships publishable route and middleware configuration, which is a good primitive — but exposing rendered customer communications on a route is a decision your security team should sign off on, and the answer may be "not without more than middleware."
  • You want confidence from adoption signals. Zero stars and zero dependents means no community validation, no third-party bug reports, and no ecosystem of answers. Weigh that honestly: the code surface is small enough to read and fork if the maintainer walks away, which is the mitigation — but it is a mitigation, not an absence of risk.
  • Your test suite already snapshots notification output. Pest/PHPUnit snapshot assertions cover regression; this package covers human review. They are complementary, and if you only get one, CI snapshots are the more durable investment.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, free developer tool that lets anyone on the team look at every email and notification our product sends without sending it. The business case is cycle time and review quality: legal, brand, and localization reviewers currently see customer messaging late in the process, or not at all before it ships. The tool moves that review earlier for close to zero cost. It runs only in development and staging, never in production, so it adds no customer-facing risk and no infrastructure spend. The caveat is vendor concentration — it is maintained by a single developer with a small user base — but the codebase is tiny and forkable, so the downside is bounded to "we maintain a preview page ourselves," which is roughly what the alternative costs anyway. Recommendation: adopt as a development-only dependency, with a named owner and a pinned version.

For engineering: Treat this as a require-dev utility, not application infrastructure. It adds a browsable route that renders every notification and mailable class — mail as HTML and plain text, other channels as their payload — and supports on-demand notifications and notifiable models. Publish the config and be deliberate about two things: the route path and the middleware that guards it in non-local environments. Verify the supported Laravel and PHP range against our pinned versions before bumping, and keep the upgrade in a normal sprint since it touches nothing at runtime. Two open questions worth a short spike: whether the route is fully inert outside local/staging once configured, and whether the package's channel coverage matches the channels we actually use. If the maintainer goes quiet, the fallback is an internal preview route — a couple of days of work — so the exit cost is low and should be documented rather than assumed.
