Repository Laravel Package

puli/repository

A PHP repository component for managing resource path and URL mappings. It provides a central registry for locating files across packages, supports filesystem and URL repositories, and integrates with Puli’s resource discovery system.

Technical Evaluation

  • Architecture fit: puli/repository is a generic PHP filesystem-like repository for arbitrary resources, not a Laravel package. It can map path/URI-like identifiers to resources, but Laravel already provides this through Storage, Flysystem disks, and asset tooling. Puli has no Laravel container bindings, config integration, facades, events, or lifecycle hooks. Fit is poor for greenfield Laravel; possible only as an isolated adapter for legacy Puli resource compatibility or a very specific resource-registry requirement.
  • Integration feasibility: Composer installation may work in isolation, but the package dates to 2016 and likely conflicts with modern Laravel dependency constraints, especially PHP 8.x, Symfony components, and Flysystem versions. Any integration requires a custom service provider, adapter layer, configuration, exception mapping, and path normalization. Feasibility is low for new applications and medium only for contained legacy use.
  • Technical risk: High lifecycle risk. Last release was 2016-02-05, repository metadata is unknown, and the broader Puli ecosystem is effectively abandoned. There is no active security patching, no guaranteed PHP 8 compatibility, and limited modern documentation. The MIT license permits forking, which mitigates legal risk but not ownership cost. The 440 stars and 3.54 score indicate niche adoption and do not offset maintenance risk.
  • Key questions: What requirement cannot be met by Laravel Storage/Flysystem? Is there existing Puli URI or resource data that must remain compatible? Which PHP and Laravel versions must be supported? Are transitive dependencies installable without conflicts? Can we fork or vendor only the minimal classes? Is read-only compatibility sufficient? Who owns security patching and the eventual exit plan?

Integration Approach

  • Stack fit: Treat puli/repository as an internal, bounded-context dependency, never as a first-class Laravel abstraction. Wrap it behind an application-owned repository interface, bind the adapter in a service provider, and keep Puli types out of controllers, models, and domain code. Map Puli paths to Laravel disk roots through configuration. Use Laravel Storage for all new resource workflows.
  • Migration path: Begin with a disposable spike and dependency audit. If Composer constraints fail, fork the minimal required classes under an internal namespace or copy them into a legacy module. Build an anti-corruption adapter covering read, write, list, exists, and delete. Import or backfill resources from existing storage. Migrate one consumer behind a feature flag, then expand only after rollback and observability are proven. Maintain an exit path back to Laravel Storage.
  • Compatibility: Verify PHP version support, Symfony component constraints, Flysystem major version, PSR interfaces, autoload behavior, and case-sensitive path handling on Linux. Run composer why-not against the target Laravel version. Test on the exact production PHP runtime. If compatibility requires downgrading Laravel or PHP, reject the integration.
  • Sequencing: 1) Validate the unmet requirement; 2) audit dependencies and license/fork feasibility; 3) build an isolated proof of concept; 4) implement adapter and contract tests; 5) feature-flag a single use case; 6) add logging, health checks, and rollback; 7) either expand deliberately or decommission. Do not sequence this as a platform-wide filesystem replacement.

Operational Impact

  • Maintenance: Upstream is unmaintained; no releases since 2016. Budget explicit ownership for dependency pinning, security review, forking, and documentation. Treat the package as vendored legacy code and freeze new usage unless a concrete compatibility requirement justifies it.
  • Support: Community support only, with stale documentation and few modern references. Internal expertise will be required. No vendor SLA exists. Support burden falls on the platform team, and the adapter plus exit plan must be documented before production use.
  • Scaling: Filesystem-like repositories scale with local disk and do not provide cloud-native or distributed consistency. Multi-node deployments need shared storage; concurrency and cache coherency are weak. Large resource counts, deep paths, and high write volume require benchmarking. There is no built-in observability, caching, or queue integration.
  • Failure modes: Missing resources, permission errors, path traversal or normalization bugs, case-sensitivity mismatches, disk exhaustion, stale caches, dependency conflicts, PHP fatal errors on incompatible runtimes, and silent divergence between Puli and Laravel storage. Add health checks, structured logging, path validation, and a tested fallback path.
  • Ramp-up: Developers understand filesystem abstractions, so basic ramp-up is low. Puli-specific URI semantics, discovery concepts, and legacy behavior raise ramp-up to medium-high. Expect a short spike plus adapter work, followed by ongoing maintenance tax. TPM recommendation: leverage the repository concept or a minimal fork only for legacy compatibility; do not adopt puli/repository as a new Laravel platform dependency.
