Shortid Php Laravel Package

pugx/shortid-php

Generate short, unique, URL-friendly IDs in PHP with PUGX ShortId. A lightweight, dependency-free library for non-sequential identifiers useful for URLs, tokens, and database keys.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Public identifier strategy (URLs, share links, API resources). ShortId produces compact, URL-safe, non-sequential strings (e.g. ppW0Z2cV). Adopting it is a decision about what users see: short links that are easy to read aloud, paste into chat, and fit in a QR code, versus opaque UUIDs or sequential database IDs. This is a UX and shareability decision as much as a technical one.
  • Privacy and enumeration resistance. Sequential IDs leak volume (/orders/1043 tells competitors how many orders you have) and invite IDOR-style probing. Non-sequential short IDs raise the cost of guessing. This makes the package relevant to any roadmap item touching public object access — shared documents, invoices, tickets, invitations.
  • Build vs. buy for ID generation. The alternative is writing your own base62/random-string helper. This package is a thin, MIT-licensed implementation of the well-known ShortId algorithm, so "buy" here costs one Composer line. The decision is really adopt a known algorithm vs. own a 30-line internal utility you must test and maintain yourself.
  • Roadmap enablers. Link shortener, referral and promo codes, invite tokens, public share links, human-readable order references, and API resource IDs all sit on the same primitive. Choosing an ID scheme now avoids three divergent implementations later.
  • Collision-budget / product-risk tradeoff. ID length is a product parameter (shorter = friendlier, higher collision probability). The package exposes alphabet and length configuration, letting you make that tradeoff explicitly rather than by accident.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are on PHP/Laravel and need short, URL-friendly, non-guessable identifiers for low-to-moderate volume (roughly thousands to low millions of IDs).
  • You want a dependency-free, single-purpose library with no service, database, or coordination layer.
  • Your IDs are generated at a single point (one app, one writer) so collision risk is a statistics question, not a distributed-systems problem.
  • You need it now for a share-link or invite-code feature and want to defer a platform-level ID service.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need sortable / time-ordered IDs. ShortId is random; it will fragment B-tree indexes and offers no natural ordering. Use ULID (symfony/uid) or UUIDv7 instead.
  • Volume is high or writes are distributed. At scale, collision handling and uniqueness guarantees need either a central generator (Snowflake-style) or a 128-bit space.
  • Maintenance and security posture matter. Signals here are weak: ~51 stars and a release cadence that is hard to verify (the listed date is anomalous — confirm it against Packagist before relying on it). Treat this as a vendored utility, not a supported dependency. If your org requires an actively maintained, audited package, prefer hidehalo/nanoid-php, ramsey/uuid, or symfony/uid.
  • Regulatory or compliance requirements apply to identifiers. Short random IDs are fine for obscurity, but they are not a security control — do not substitute them for authorization checks.

Adoption gate: run a short spike — generate 10M IDs, measure collisions and throughput, and confirm no dependency conflicts. Cost of reversal is low if you isolate generation behind an internal IdGenerator interface.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free, MIT-licensed library that lets us give customers short, shareable links (yourapp.com/s/ppW0Z2cV) instead of long, ugly ones or IDs that expose how many customers we have. It unblocks link-sharing, invite codes, and public share links with roughly a day of engineering effort and no infrastructure cost. The main caveat is that the package is low-profile and lightly maintained, so we should wrap it behind our own interface — that keeps the exit cost near zero if we ever need to swap it out. Recommend: approve for the share-links feature, do not standardize on it org-wide without a review.

To engineering: One Composer dependency, no runtime services. It generates short base62-style random IDs; uniqueness is probabilistic, so we need a unique constraint plus a retry on insert — that's the whole integration. I'd put it behind an IdGenerator contract so we can move to ULID or UUIDv7 later without touching call sites, and I'd avoid it for anything that needs time-ordering or index locality. Budget a half-day spike to validate collision behavior at our expected volume and confirm the package's maintenance status against Packagist before we commit.
