Symfony Middleware Bundle Laravel Package

pierotto/symfony-middleware-bundle

pierotto/symfony-middleware-bundle adds a simple middleware pipeline to Symfony apps, letting you run reusable layers before and after controllers for auth, logging, CORS, caching, and other cross-cutting concerns without cluttering controllers.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Laravel 11 / Symfony 7 upgrade planning. Laravel 11 moved its underlying Symfony components to the 7.x line. A package that adds Symfony 7.0 component support removes a hard blocker for teams scheduling that upgrade — this is the single most decision-relevant fact in the release.
  • Build vs. buy on integration glue. If the alternative is maintaining an in-house adapter/bridge against Symfony components, this package absorbs the version-matrix maintenance burden. The 1.1.0 release is direct evidence the maintainer is actively tracking upstream majors rather than letting the compatibility surface rot.
  • Dependency EOL and platform-matrix roadmap. This release widens the supported matrix rather than narrowing it — it should be reflected in our supported-versions policy and in any "minimum framework version" decisions on the product roadmap.
  • Feature go/no-go on downstream work. Any planned feature that depends on Symfony 7-only component behavior becomes unblocked; anything still pinned to Symfony 6.x is unaffected and gains nothing from this bump.
  • Vendor-risk posture. A prompt, additive compatibility release is a positive maintenance signal to weigh against the usual single-maintainer risk for small Laravel packages.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • We are on, or actively planning, Laravel 11+ / Symfony 7 components and need a maintained bridge rather than a fork or a replace/patch hack in composer.json.
  • The package's value is abstraction over Symfony components that we would otherwise hand-roll and version-pin ourselves.
  • We want a dependency whose maintainer demonstrably ships upstream-compatibility releases (this release is the evidence).
  • The integration is non-differentiating — commodity plumbing we should not own.

Look elsewhere / defer when:

  • We are staying on Laravel 10 / Symfony 6.x for the planning horizon; 1.1.0 is a no-op for us and should not drive a decision.
  • The package is a thin wrapper over functionality now first-party in Laravel — check for native coverage before adopting.
  • Compatibility is the only thing the release tells us. We have no signal here on feature depth, test coverage, security posture, or maintainer bus factor; if the decision hinges on those, require a fuller evaluation (issues, release cadence, dependency tree, CI matrix) before committing.
  • Adding a dependency for a single narrow use case would cost more in supply-chain surface than the code it replaces.

Caveat for this assessment: the only input is the 1.1.0 release note. Treat the above as scoped to compatibility and maintenance risk, not as an endorsement of feature fit.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one line): A low-risk compatibility release — the package now works with Symfony 7 components, which is what Laravel 11 runs on. It keeps our upgrade path open and costs us nothing if we don't upgrade yet.

For engineering:

  • 1.1.0 is additive per semver — new support for Symfony 7.0 components, no removals, no deprecations announced. Low migration risk.
  • It unblocks Laravel 11 adoption wherever this package was the last Symfony-6-only dependency in the tree. Worth a dependency audit to confirm it was the blocker.
  • Action: add Symfony 7 / Laravel 11 to the CI matrix, bump the constraint, and verify transitive Symfony component versions resolve cleanly (composer why-not). Do not pair this bump with unrelated upgrades in the same change.
  • Residual risk is unchanged and pre-existing: small-package maintenance and supply-chain exposure. This release improves the maintenance signal but does not resolve that question — if it matters, ask for a fuller due-diligence pass before we standardize on it.
