Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit. This release hardens the package's architecture around a framework-agnostic contract (StatementRepositoryInterface) and stable sibling dependencies (php-xapi/model and php-xapi/test-fixtures at ^1.0). For a Laravel shop, this is a net positive: by removing the Doctrine-oriented MappedStatement, MappedVerb, and concrete StatementRepository from this package, the maintainers have untangled the storage abstraction from the Doctrine persistence model. That makes it more natural to implement the repository against Eloquent, the Laravel-native ORM, rather than fighting a Doctrine-shaped base class. The package now behaves as a thin contract layer, which is exactly what a TPM should want when integrating an xAPI statement store into a Laravel application.

Integration feasibility. The headline change is that there is no longer a concrete StatementRepository to extend. Teams must either (a) implement StatementRepositoryInterface directly, or (b) adopt php-xapi/repository-doctrine if they are on Doctrine. For Laravel teams, (a) is the expected path and is feasible: a service provider can bind StatementRepositoryInterface to an Eloquent-backed implementation, and controllers/jobs can depend on the interface. The StatementId value-object migration is a clean type-safety improvement and aligns with Laravel's container-based autowiring, but it is a signature-level breaking change that ripples into every call site.

Technical risk. The dominant risk is the breaking surface area in a single release: removed classes (MappedStatement, MappedVerb, StatementRepository), removed NotFoundException (relocated to php-xapi/exception), and changed method contracts (findStatementById, findVoidedStatementById, storeStatement) now using StatementId and returning StatementId. Because this is a 0.x release, semver permits these breaks, but consumers on ^0.2 will break on upgrade. The dependency bump to ^1.0 for model and test-fixtures is stabilizing but means version-skew risk if any part of the application still pins older model versions. Risk is concentrated in existing custom repository implementations and any code importing the old exception or string-based statement IDs.

Key questions. (1) Does the team already have a custom repository extending the removed StatementRepository, and how much logic lives in it? (2) Is the storage target Eloquent or Doctrine — this determines whether we implement the interface ourselves or pull in repository-doctrine? (3) Are there persisted statement IDs or serialized payloads that assume string IDs and need backfilling to StatementId? (4) Do any tests or fixtures depend on the removed NotFoundException namespace?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. The package is a PHP library, not a Laravel package with a bundled service provider, so integration is via Composer plus a thin application-layer adapter. The ideal shape is: an Eloquent model for statement persistence, a StatementRepositoryInterface implementation that maps between the model and php-xapi/model Statement/StatementId objects, and a service provider binding the interface in the container. The removal of Doctrine classes actually simplifies this for a Laravel stack because there is no inherited base class to work around.

Migration path. For any existing consumer: (1) upgrade php-xapi/model and php-xapi/test-fixtures to ^1.0 first and resolve conflicts; (2) replace imports of the old NotFoundException with PhpXapi\Exception\NotFoundException; (3) refactor the repository to implement StatementRepositoryInterface rather than extending StatementRepository; (4) update signatures to accept StatementId and return StatementId from storeStatement; (5) audit all callers that assumed string IDs and wrap/unwrap StatementId at the boundaries. If the team is on Doctrine, skip steps 3–4 and adopt php-xapi/repository-doctrine.

Compatibility. This is a hard break on ^0.2. Pin the new version explicitly and gate the upgrade behind the refactor branch. There is no backward-compatible shim for the removed classes, so mixed-version deployments (some services on 0.2, some on 0.3) will produce class-not-found and signature errors at runtime. Coordinate the upgrade with the model and test-fixtures ^1.0 bump to avoid transitive version conflicts.

Sequencing. Do the dependency bump and exception-namespace swap first (low-risk, mechanical), then introduce the interface implementation (higher-risk, design work), then migrate call sites to StatementId, and finally remove the old repository code path. Keep the persistence schema stable across all steps so the refactor is isolated to PHP code rather than a data migration.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. The team now owns the repository implementation. Previously, a base StatementRepository absorbed some boilerplate; that maintenance burden shifts to us. The upside is control and no Doctrine coupling. Budget ongoing effort for keeping the Eloquent implementation aligned with the interface as the package evolves — interface changes are precisely the kind of break this release demonstrates.

Support. Dependency support is improved by stabilizing on php-xapi/model and php-xapi/test-fixtures at ^1.0; these are now stable releases, which reduces churn. However, the exception relocation means support docs, runbooks, and any error-handling middleware that matched on NotFoundException must be updated, or failure-path logging will miss or mislabel errors.

Scaling. The package itself is a contract layer and imposes no scaling characteristics; scaling is entirely a function of the Eloquent implementation we build (indexing on statement IDs and voided-statement lookups, pagination, query shape). The interface-based design makes it easy to introduce caching decorators around the repository, which is a practical lever for read-heavy xAPI ingestion.

Failure modes. Watch for: class-not-found errors if any process still references removed classes; type errors from callers passing strings where StatementId is now required; return-type mismatches in storeStatement; and not-found handling regressions during the exception-namespace migration. Mixed-version deployments are the highest-severity failure mode and should be prevented by explicit version pinning.

Ramp-up. Moderate. Engineers must understand the StatementId value object, the interface contract, and the boundary between Eloquent models and php-xapi/model domain objects. A short spike to build the Eloquent-backed implementation and wire the service provider will surface most of the integration friction before a full migration commitment.
