Test Laravel Package

phine/test

phine/test is a lightweight Laravel/PHP testing package that adds convenient helpers and utilities for writing cleaner, more reliable tests. It aims to reduce boilerplate, simplify common testing tasks, and fit easily into existing projects.

Getting Started

phine/test is a PHPUnit-era helper library from the Phine build-tool ecosystem. It is archived (last release 2013-12-30, 2 stars, 0 dependents), so treat it as a source of small utilities to copy rather than a dependency you install and forget.

Minimal steps:

  1. Inspect before installing. Open https://github.com/kherge-archive/lib-test and read, in order:

    • composer.json — confirm the real namespace, PHP constraint, and PHPUnit constraint (likely ~3.7/~4.0 and PHP 5.3–5.5).
    • src/ — the entire surface area is small; inventory the public classes and traits.
    • tests/ — the project's own suite is the de-facto documentation.
    • README / CHANGELOG — expect thin or absent docs.
  2. Decide install vs. vendor. On a modern stack, composer require --dev phine/test will almost certainly fail resolution (PHP 8.x and PHPUnit 10/11 are incompatible with a 2013 constraint set). Prefer one of:

    • Copy the handful of helper classes into tests/Support/ under your own namespace.
    • Add it as a VCS/path repository pinned to the archived commit if you must keep the original code intact.
  3. First use case. The typical pattern is a base test case: your project's TestCase extends the package's test case (or uses its trait) to inherit fixture/temp-file helpers and custom assertions. Start by writing one trivial test that exercises a single helper (e.g. creating a temp directory or a fixture) to confirm the class autoloads and behaves on your PHP version before wiring it into the whole suite.

  4. Pin and isolate. Because the repo is archived, commit a lockfile entry or vendor the code, and wrap any usage behind your own thin adapter so a future migration to native PHPUnit helpers is a one-file change.

Implementation Patterns

Base class inheritance (the primary pattern). Create a single project-level Tests\TestCase that extends the package's test case. Every test then inherits the helpers without repeating setup. Keep this the only place that references the package namespace — this is your seam for removal later.

namespace Tests;

use Phine\Test\...; // verify actual FQCN from src/

abstract class TestCase extends \Phine\Test\... {}

Fixture and temp-resource helpers. The value of a 2013 test library is usually filesystem/fixture convenience: creating temp dirs, writing fixtures, cleaning up in tearDown(). Adopt a strict rule: every temp resource is created in setUp() and destroyed in tearDown(), even if the helper claims to auto-clean. Wrap creation in try/finally semantics where the helper doesn't.

Custom assertions as named intent. If the library exposes assertion helpers, use them to name domain concepts (assertValidConfig(), assertSameFile()) rather than to replace PHPUnit's built-ins. If the helper's failure message is poor, wrap it in your own assertion that calls fail() with a useful diff.

Mock helpers. If mocking utilities are present, prefer them only for legacy interfaces. For new code, use PHPUnit's native createMock()/createStub(); the package predates createStub(), expects() refinements, and return-type-safe mocks.

CI integration. Add a smoke job that runs the helper-backed suite against a pinned PHP version matching the package (5.4–5.6 via a container), separate from your modern PHP job. If you only ever run modern PHP, you are effectively maintaining a fork — test the fork.

Migration-friendly structure. Keep usage to: (a) one base class, (b) a small set of wrappers in tests/Support/. Then "removing phine/test" is: reimplement those wrappers with PHPUnit 10+ equivalents and delete one use statement.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Archived = no fixes. There is no maintainer, no security process, and no compatibility updates. Any bug you hit is yours to patch in a fork.
  • PHPUnit API drift is the main breaker. Code written for PHPUnit 3.x/4.x will break on 5+ (setUp(): void signatures, removed PHPUnit_Framework_* classes, assertInternalType removal, getMock removal). Expect fatal errors, not graceful deprecations, if you point a modern PHPUnit at it.
  • PHP version drift. PHP 8 makes each() removal, dynamic-property deprecations, and stricter type errors relevant. 2013 code is unlikely to pass cleanly.
  • Package name vs. library identity. The name phine/test and repo kherge-archive/lib-test differ; verify the Composer name field in composer.json before requiring, and check whether the phine/* namespace was ever published to Packagist. A 404 on Packagist means you must use a VCS/path repository.
  • Autoloading. Old code often uses PSR-0 or a manual require. If PSR-4 is absent, you will need a custom autoloader or a classmap entry — do not assume composer dump-autoload fixes it.
  • Silent cleanup failures. Temp-file helpers that register shutdown functions or rely on __destruct can hide leaks under PHPUnit's process isolation. Verify cleanup explicitly with an assertion in tearDown(), or run with --process-isolation once to confirm behavior.
  • Global state. Older test utilities mutate $_SERVER, chdir(), or ini settings without restoring them. Snapshot and restore in your base class.
  • Debugging strategy. Because documentation is absent, debug by reading the source next to the package's own tests: run vendor/bin/phpunit on the vendored package tests first — if those pass, the helper behaves as intended; if they fail, your environment is the problem, not your usage.
  • Extension points are limited. There is no plugin system. Extension means inheritance or copying. Prefer copying: it survives a fork and gives you ownership of the code.
  • Recommendation. For anything greenfield, do not adopt this — use PHPUnit 10/11 native fixtures (setUp/tearDown), data providers, and custom assertions in a base class. Leverage phine/test only as a reference implementation for small helper ideas, or as a short-lived bridge while porting an existing 2013-era suite.
