Product Decisions This Supports
- Field-level encryption strategy: whether to encrypt sensitive columns (PII, PHI, financial data) at the ORM layer versus relying on disk/DB-level encryption, a managed KMS, or Laravel's native encrypted casts.
- Build vs. buy vs. fork: this package frames the choice between adopting a maintained library, forking an abandoned one, or building a small internal encryptor with a named owner.
- ORM architecture direction: it only applies to Doctrine ORM, not Laravel's Eloquent. Do not let it pull the team toward Doctrine just to reuse an encryption library.
- Roadmap gating for compliance commitments (GDPR, HIPAA, PCI): a checklist input for which features can ship before encryption-at-rest is in place.
- Use cases it conceptually targets: encrypting email, name, address, SSN, medical notes, or payment references in entity columns, with decisions about what must remain queryable versus what can be opaque.
- Risk register: adopting a "WIP DO NOT USE," 1-star, zero-dependent package last released in January 2022 is a supply-chain and maintainability risk that belongs in any decision record.
When to Consider This Package
- Only as a reference implementation or read-only case study if you are already committed to Doctrine ORM and want to see how field-level encryption was attempted in PHP.
- As a fork base if you have spare engineering capacity, accept full ownership, and can staff security review, tests, dependency upgrades, and ongoing maintenance. The MIT license removes legal blockers, not operational ones.
- Never as a production dependency in its current state: the package's own description says "WIP DO NOT USE," it has one star, no dependents, and its last release was January 2022.
- Look elsewhere if you need an active release cadence, security advisories, community support, documented key management, or Laravel/Eloquent integration.
- Prefer Laravel's built-in encrypted casts or a custom cast class for Eloquent models; prefer a maintained Doctrine encryption bundle if Doctrine is mandatory.
- Skip entirely if database-level transparent encryption or a managed column-encryption service meets the requirement with fewer application-layer failure modes.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
Executive summary: this is not a product to adopt; it is a work-in-progress experiment. It should not shift the roadmap, but it should sharpen the encryption build-versus-buy decision. One star, zero dependents, and a 2022 last release mean there is no community or vendor to rely on.
For executives: there is no direct cost to ignoring it, and no credible savings from adopting it. Encrypting sensitive data is a real compliance and trust requirement, but meeting it through an unmaintained package is a risk we should decline. The ask is a decision and a budget line: adopt a maintained library, or fund a small internal build with a clear owner and security review.
For engineering: treat this as reference material only. On Eloquent, the path is native encrypted casts plus key management; on Doctrine, evaluate maintained alternatives first. Any fork implies indefinite ownership of upgrades, tests, and security patching.
Bottom line: reject as a dependency, retain as an input to the encryption design decision.
