Getting Started

Minimal Setup

  1. Installation:

    composer require phalcon/volt

    (Note: Volt is traditionally used with Phalcon PHP, but can be integrated into Laravel via custom bridges.)

  2. Basic Template File: Create a .volt file (e.g., resources/views/hello.volt):

    <h1>Hello, {{ name }}!</h1>

    (Volt uses PHP-like syntax but with stricter templating rules.)

  3. First Render: Use a custom service to bridge Volt with Laravel’s view system:

    // app/Providers/AppServiceProvider.php
    public function boot()
    {
        View::addExtension('volt', function ($view, $path, $data) {
            $compiler = new \Volt\Compiler();
            $compiler->setOptions(['compiledExtension' => '.volt.php']);
            $compiler->compileString(file_get_contents($path), $path . '.php');
            extract($data);
            ob_start();
            include $path . '.php';
            return ob_get_clean();
        });
    }

    Render in a controller:

    return View::make('hello', ['name' => 'Laravel']);

Implementation Patterns

1. Dynamic Partial Rendering

Use Volt’s include and extends for modular views:

{extends "layout.volt"}
{block content}
    {include "partials/header.volt"}
    <p>Dynamic content: {{ $dynamicVar }}</p>
{/block}

2. Conditional Logic & Loops

Volt supports PHP-like control structures:

{if $user->isAdmin()}
    <a href="/admin">Admin Panel</a>
{/if}

{foreach $items as $item}
    <li>{{ $item->name }}</li>
{/foreach}

3. Custom Filters

Register Volt filters in Laravel’s service provider:

Volt::getCompiler()->addFunction('uppercase', function ($args) {
    return 'strtoupper(' . $args[0] . ')';
});

Usage in template:

{{ $text|uppercase }}

4. Integration with Laravel’s Blade

Use Volt for complex logic while keeping Blade for simplicity:

  • Place .volt files in resources/views/components/ for reusable logic.
  • Call them from Blade:
    @include('volt-components.complex-form.volt')

5. Caching Compiled Templates

Configure Volt’s compiler to cache outputs:

$compiler = new \Volt\Compiler();
$compiler->setOptions([
    'compiledExtension' => '.volt.php',
    'compiledPath'      => storage_path('framework/views'),
]);

Gotchas and Tips

Pitfalls

  1. No Direct Blade Compatibility:

    • Volt does not support Blade directives (@if, @foreach). Use Volt’s native syntax.
    • Workaround: Pre-process Blade templates to Volt or use Volt for logic-heavy sections.
  2. Strict Variable Scope:

    • Volt templates do not inherit PHP’s $_GET, $_POST, or global variables by default.
    • Pass required data explicitly:
      return View::make('page', [
          'user' => auth()->user(),
          'request' => request()->all(),
      ]);

  3. Compilation Overhead:

    • Volt compiles templates to PHP at runtime (unless cached). For high-traffic apps, pre-compile templates during deployment:
      php artisan volt:compile

      (Note: Requires custom artisan command setup.)
  4. Escaping Quirks:

    • Volt auto-escapes variables by default. To disable:
      {{ $unsafeHtml|raw }}

Debugging Tips

  • Enable Compiler Debugging:

    $compiler->setOptions(['debug' => true]);

    Outputs compiled PHP to storage/logs/volt-compiled.php.

  • Check Compiled Output: Inspect generated PHP files in storage/framework/views to debug rendering issues.

  • Common Errors:

    • Undefined Variable: Ensure all template variables are passed from Laravel.
    • Syntax Errors: Volt is stricter than Blade. Use {{ }} for output, not <?php echo ?>.

Extension Points

  1. Custom Compiler: Extend \Volt\Compiler to add domain-specific logic (e.g., custom tags, filters).

  2. Laravel Service Provider Bridge: Override Laravel’s View facade to integrate Volt seamlessly:

    View::addNamespace('volt', app_path('Resources/Views'));

  3. Live Reloading: Use Laravel Mix or Vite to watch .volt files and auto-recompile during development.

  4. Testing: Mock Volt templates in PHPUnit:

    $volt = new \Volt\Engine();
    $result = $volt->render('template.volt', ['data' => $data]);
