Getting Started

  • Install with composer require <vendor>/<package>:^1.0 — the 1.0.1 patch release carries no documented breaking changes, so a caret constraint keeps you on the 1.0 line while picking up fixes.
  • If auto-discovery is enabled (extra.laravel.providers / extra.laravel.aliases in the package's composer.json), the service provider and facade are registered for you. If not, add the provider manually to config/app.php (or bootstrap/providers.php on Laravel 11+).
  • Publish and read the config first: php artisan vendor:publish --tag=<package>-config. The config file is the contract for almost everything else — endpoint, credentials, driver, queue name, table names. Diff it against the package's README defaults before editing.
  • Check for publishable assets you might need depending on your use case: --tag=<package>-migrations, --tag=<package>-views, --tag=<package>-assets. Run php artisan vendor:publish with no tag once to see what the package offers.
  • First use case: a smoke test in php artisan tinker or a throwaway route that resolves the package from the container and performs one read operation. This validates credentials/config and the service provider wiring before you build anything real.

Implementation Patterns

  • Resolve from the container, not with new. Inject the package's client/manager into your own service class rather than calling it inline in controllers. This keeps the package swappable and makes it trivial to mock in tests.
  • Wrap it in a thin adapter. Even in a small app, put a YourApp\Services\... class in front of the package's API. Config keys, method signatures and exceptions then only leak into one file, which pays off the first time you upgrade a minor version or swap the package out.
  • Prefer constructor injection over the facade in anything reused (jobs, listeners, commands). Facades are fine in controllers and Blade, but they hide the dependency and make isolated unit tests noisier.
  • Configure per-environment. Keep real credentials in .env and reference them from config/<package>.php; never commit secrets into the published config. Add the package's env keys to .env.example so new developers aren't guessing.
  • Queue it if the package does remote I/O. Wrap outgoing calls in a job with $tries, $backoff and a timeout tuned to the package's own HTTP timeout — otherwise a slow provider becomes a slow request.
  • React via events. If the package dispatches events, listen rather than poll. Register listeners in EventServiceProvider / bootstrap/app.php and keep the listener idempotent so retries are safe.
  • Test with fakes where offered. If the package ships a ::fake() or an interface you can bind, bind it in setUp() / a test service provider so the suite never hits the network. Otherwise use Http::fake() around the underlying client.
  • Standard integration touchpoints: bind any package interface in a dedicated PackageServiceProvider (register() for bindings, boot() for publishes/views/routes); publish migrations before running migrate in CI; add the package's scheduled commands to routes/console.php / Kernel::schedule() if one ships.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Config caching bites first. After editing the published config, run php artisan config:clear (and config:cache in deploy). Stale cached config is the single most common "the package ignores my settings" cause.
  • Auto-discovery silently off. Packages installed with --no-scripts or with discovery disabled in composer.json won't register their provider. Symptom: Target class [...] does not exist or a facade throwing "A facade root has not been set."
  • Publish tags are versioned. Re-publishing with --force on upgrade will overwrite your edits. Treat the published config as application code (version it, diff it) rather than regenerating it.
  • Pin deliberately. 1.0.1 is a patch with no notes — safe, but read the changelog before jumping minors. Use ^1.0 for libraries and consider exact pins for packages that do remote I/O.
  • Long-lived workers. Under Octane, Horizon or Swoole, singletons holding connections or per-request state leak between requests. If the package binds a singleton with mutable state, register a reset/scoped binding.
  • Migrations run in filename order. The package's migrations may assume tables your app creates later. If foreign keys fail, move your migration earlier or temporarily disable FK checks in the migration itself.
  • Debugging checklist: php artisan about (shows discovered providers), php artisan package:discover to re-run discovery, php artisan vendor:publish --provider="..." to confirm the provider FQCN, and Log::debug() around the adapter boundary to see exactly what the package receives and returns.
  • Extension points worth knowing: most packages expose a manager with an extend()/driver registration hook or an interface you can bind() in your own provider. Rebinding the interface is always preferable to monkey-patching vendor code — never edit vendor/.
  • Version 1.0.1 specifically: no migration steps, no config key changes described. Upgrade with composer update <vendor>/<package> and verify with your smoke test if the package touches persistence or remote services.
