pchapl/ids
pchapl/ids is a lightweight Laravel package for generating and managing unique identifiers for Eloquent models. It makes it easy to add custom ID behavior to your models with minimal configuration, reducing boilerplate while keeping identifiers consistent and application-specific.
Str::uuid(), Str::ulid()) and in first-party/vendor libraries (ramsey/uuid, Symfony Uid), the decision is usually "build or use the framework," not "integrate a third party."Consider adopting when:
pchapl/ids and a migration to first-party ID helpers is not yet scheduled.Str::uuid()/Str::ulid() or ramsey/uuid provide, and you have verified that in code rather than by description.Look elsewhere when:
Str::uuid()/Str::ulid() or a well-maintained library such as ramsey/uuid or Symfony Uid.For executives: This is a tiny, single-purpose Laravel/PHP package for generating unique IDs. It is not a strategic dependency: the capability is a commodity already provided by Laravel and standard PHP libraries. Adoption carries disproportionate risk for its value — zero community adoption, a last release in 2021, and an uncommon WTFPL license. Recommendation: do not add it to the platform as a core dependency. If a specific behavior is needed, direct engineering to reproduce it internally (days of work at most) or use a maintained alternative, avoiding long-term ownership and legal overhead.
For engineering: Treat this as a reference implementation, not a dependency. The package is small enough to audit and, if its configurable ID behavior is genuinely useful, vendor or reimplement the relevant logic behind an internal IdGenerator interface so we are not coupled to an unmaintained project. Validate any decision against our Laravel/PHP support matrix; the 2021 release may not be tested against current versions. Prefer Str::uuid()/Str::ulid(), ramsey/uuid, or Symfony Uid for new work. If we do adopt it, pin an exact Composer constraint, add a smoke test suite around ID uniqueness/format, and note the WTFPL in our license inventory. The absence of a changelog, security policy, and release cadence is a maintenance risk we should weigh before letting it touch persistence keys or public identifiers.
