Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy on payments. The SDK is the "buy" option for accepting Benelux payment methods without owning card acquiring, PCI scope, or PSP licensing. It lets you price the alternative honestly: a few weeks of integration vs. months of compliance work.
  • Checkout roadmap and method coverage. Which methods ship next — iDEAL, Bancontact, cards, SEPA, PayPal, gift cards — is bounded by what this SDK exposes. That makes it the input to your payment-method roadmap per market, not an afterthought.
  • Market-entry sequencing. If the Netherlands/Belgium is the beachhead, local method coverage is table stakes for conversion. This package is the cheapest credible path to a checkout Dutch customers recognise.
  • Post-purchase and finance ops scope. Refunds, partial refunds, transaction lookups and settlement data available here determine what support and finance can automate versus handle manually in the Pay.nl dashboard. That is a staffing and tooling decision, not just a technical one.
  • Recurring and marketplace feasibility. Evaluate whether Pay.nl's recurring and split-payment capabilities cover subscriptions or multi-seller payouts before committing to a separate billing engine.
  • Integration ownership is a real line item. This is a low-level SDK, not a Laravel package — no service provider, no publishable config, no facades. A scoped internal wrapper (roughly one to two sprints) belongs in the roadmap; treating it as "free" is how payment code ends up scattered across controllers.
  • Architectural risk decision. Thin adoption (~40 stars, near-zero dependents) should trigger an explicit decision now: integrate behind an internal PaymentGateway interface with contract tests against the sandbox, so a future PSP switch is configuration rather than a rewrite.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • Your stack is PHP/Laravel and the team is comfortable owning a thin integration and webhook layer.
  • Netherlands/Belgium is your primary market and iDEAL, Bancontact and SEPA are must-have methods.
  • You have, or are prepared to get, a Pay.nl merchant account — the SDK is inert without one. Onboarding, KYC and commercial terms are the real gate, not the code.
  • You want a direct PSP relationship (rates, settlement timing, control) rather than a merchant-of-record taking a margin.
  • You need transaction-level control: partial refunds, status reconciliation, and webhooks feeding your own ledger.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need global coverage or US card acquiring — Pay.nl's footprint is Benelux-centric.
  • You want a batteries-included Laravel integration (config, migrations, webhooks, billable models). Those ergonomics are yours to build here.
  • You need multi-PSP routing, failover, or one API across providers — an orchestration layer is the better buy.
  • Community depth matters: few stars and dependents means sparse examples and you'll debug largely alone.
  • Checkout is a commodity and a hosted redirect flow with minimal code is sufficient.
  • You are not on PHP.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: This is a low-cost, low-lock-in route to accepting the payment methods Dutch and Belgian customers actually expect, through an established licensed PSP. MIT licensing means no fee — the investment is engineering time, realistically one to two sprints for a proper wrapper, webhook handling and reconciliation. The principal risk is not the code but the thin community and the fact that it is a bare SDK. Mitigate by keeping it behind our own interface so a PSP switch is a config change, not a rewrite. If Benelux is the beachhead, this is the pragmatic default; if we go multi-region or want zero-ops checkout, revisit with an orchestrator.

Engineering: Treat it as a transport-level dependency only. Wrap it in our own gateway interface, add contract tests against the Pay.nl sandbox, enforce idempotency keys and webhook signature verification, and never let its DTOs leak into domain code. Track its release cadence and issue responsiveness as a watched risk rather than a blocker.
