Phpunit Accelerator Laravel Package

padraic/phpunit-accelerator

padraic/phpunit-accelerator is a PHPUnit extension that speeds up test execution for PHP projects. It helps shorten feedback loops by reducing time spent waiting on test suites, making it easier to iterate quickly while continuing to use PHPUnit.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Whether to fund a "test suite speed" workstream at all. This package exists to answer a single question — "can we cut PHPUnit wall-clock time without rewriting tests?" — and its existence (plus its very low adoption: 12 stars, 0 dependents) is useful evidence that parallel test execution is a real, recurring engineering pain point rather than a one-team quirk. That justifies putting developer-loop latency on the roadmap.
  • Build vs. buy vs. don't-bother. It is a reference point in the "parallelize the test suite" option set alongside ParaTest, Pest's built-in parallel mode, and CI-level test splitting. Evaluating it forces the build/buy conversation to happen with concrete tradeoffs instead of a vague "tests are slow."
  • Adoption risk calibration for dev-only tooling. A single-maintainer, zero-dependent, listener-based package is a textbook low-bus-factor dependency. Deciding on it produces a reusable policy: dev dependencies still need a maintenance story, even if they never ship to production.
  • Prioritizing CI spend vs. CI optimization. If the suite is the bottleneck, the PM choice is "buy more CI runners" (opex, immediate) versus "invest in parallel execution" (eng time, compounding). Assessments like this one feed that comparison directly.
  • Reference-implementation research. The fork-per-child pattern (pcntl-based, Unix-only) is worth reading as prior art when specifying an internal test-runner improvement or a CI shard strategy — even if the code never becomes a dependency.
  • Not supported: any decision requiring security posture, licensing risk review, or vendor support — MIT and abandoned is trivially safe to read, unsafe to rely on.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only in a narrow set of circumstances:

  • Legacy PHPUnit (pre-10) codebase still using the TestListener API. PHPUnit deprecated listeners in 9 and removed the interface in 10, so anything modern is out of scope by construction.
  • Unix/Linux-only CI and dev machines, since the acceleration relies on pcntl process forking and has no Windows path.
  • A large, slow, already-isolated suite (hundreds of tests, no shared global state, no database lock contention) where a drop-in listener could plausibly help with near-zero code change.
  • A team willing to vendor/fork and own it. With 12 stars and no dependents, you are the maintainer the moment you install it.
  • A short-term spike, not a platform commitment — timeboxed proof that parallelism helps before buying into a maintained tool.

Look elsewhere when:

  • PHPUnit 10+ or Pest. Use Pest's parallel mode or ParaTest; the listener API this package hooks is gone.
  • You need merging of code coverage across processes, per-worker database setup, deterministic retries, or CI shard orchestration — ParaTest covers this surface; this package does not.
  • You need a support contract, CVE response, or onboarding documentation. None exist here.
  • The suite is small or already fast (under ~2–3 minutes). Parallelism adds flakiness surface for negligible gain; fix the slow tests instead.
  • Windows or mixed-OS developer fleets.

Net recommendation: do not adopt as a dependency. Treat it as evidence for the roadmap item and as prior art, and route the actual implementation to a maintained alternative.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: Our test suite is a throughput tax — every engineer waits on it on every push, and CI minutes are a recurring line item. This package is a small, MIT-licensed, single-maintainer tool that attacks exactly that problem by running PHPUnit tests in parallel child processes. It is not something I recommend we depend on: it targets an older PHPUnit API, works only on Linux, and has effectively no user base, which means we'd own it. The value here is the decision it surfaces, not the code: a modest, timeboxed investment in parallel test execution (via ParaTest, Pest parallel, or CI test splitting) can cut the developer feedback loop and CI spend, and this assessment is the cheap way to scope that bet.

To engineering: This is a listener that forks worker processes to run tests concurrently, built for pre-PHPUnit-10 and Unix only. It's useful as a reference for how fork-per-child execution works and as a reminder of what we'd otherwise reimplement, but the listener interface it relies on was deprecated in PHPUnit 9 and removed in 10, so it's a dead end for our stack. If we pursue parallelism, the realistic options are Pest's parallel mode (if we're on Pest), ParaTest (for PHPUnit with coverage merging and per-worker bootstrap support), or CI-level sharding. I'd like a short spike to measure our current suite duration and flakiness rate so we can size the win before committing.

One-line ask: Approve a timeboxed investigation of parallel test execution using a maintained tool, and record "modernize/speed up the test suite" as a roadmap candidate.
