Repoist Laravel Package

ozankurt/repoist

Repoist is a Laravel package that simplifies the repository pattern. It provides Artisan commands to generate repository classes and interfaces for Eloquent models, helping organize database queries, keep controllers lean, and make data access easier to test and maintain.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy on internal scaffolding. Repoist is a code generator, not runtime infrastructure — the decision it informs is whether to adopt a third-party artisan generator to standardize the repository pattern across a codebase, or to encode that boilerplate in your own stubs/IDE templates. Because the package is MIT and shallow in scope, "buy" here really means "vendor a small, forkable generator," and the build alternative is a few hours of stub work.
  • Architecture standardization. If your team has committed to repositories as a boundary between controllers/services and Eloquent, a generator is how you enforce that pattern consistently across squads and onboarding engineers. This package's value is convention enforcement (interface + concrete class pairs, correct namespacing, bindings), not novel capability.
  • Roadmap timing and platform currency. With a last release in September 2019, this package sits squarely in the Laravel 5.x era. Any roadmap item that assumes Laravel 8+/PHP 8+ compatibility should treat adoption as a research spike, not a committed dependency. It informs the "do we modernize this legacy service or let it age out" conversation rather than a forward-looking feature bet.
  • Use-case fit for greenfield vs. legacy. The realistic use case is a legacy Laravel 5 application where the repository pattern is already the house style and scaffolding velocity is the bottleneck. It is not a fit for new product lines, where Laravel's native Eloquent/action patterns and modern tooling already cover the need.
  • Vendor-risk policy calibration. A 92-star package with a seven-year-old release is a useful test case for whatever dependency policy you're trying to establish — it forces an explicit answer on maintenance ownership, fork rights, and acceptable staleness for dev-only tooling versus production runtime code.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • You are maintaining a Laravel 5.x application (or a fork you control) where the repository pattern is already mandated.
  • The generator is used at development time only — it produces code you own and commit, so the package itself never ships to production and adds no runtime attack surface.
  • Your team accepts ownership of the fork: you will patch compatibility, update stubs to your conventions, and pin the dependency. Treat it as a starting template, not a supported library.
  • The boilerplate cost is real and recurring — many entities, multiple squads, repeated interface/implementation/binding triples — enough that a generator beats copy-paste.

Look elsewhere (or hand-roll stubs) when:

  • You are on Laravel 8, 9, 10, 11+ or PHP 8+. The package predates those and should be assumed incompatible until proven otherwise; the compatibility work likely exceeds the value.
  • You need maintenance guarantees, security review, or vendor support. There is none: no recent releases, thin community, no issue-triage Signal.
  • Your architecture does not already use repositories. Adopting a generator to justify a pattern you haven't decided on is backwards — decide the pattern first, and note that repositories over Eloquent are a contested default in modern Laravel.
  • Your scaffolding needs are small. A handful of classes is faster to write by hand or template in your IDE than to evaluate, fork, and maintain a dependency for.
  • Alternatives suffice: custom artisan stubs (stub:publish), IDE live templates, or newer actively maintained generator/scaffolding tooling in the Laravel ecosystem.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free, MIT-licensed developer utility — not a platform decision. It saves engineering typing time in legacy Laravel 5 code by auto-generating repository boilerplate. The strategic read is caution, not opportunity: the project has been unmaintained since 2019 and has minimal adoption (~90 stars), so we should not build any roadmap commitment on top of it. Recommendation: no budget, no dependency for new products; at most a timeboxed evaluation inside an existing legacy service, with our own engineering owning the fork.

To engineering: Repoist scaffolds the interface/implementation/binding triple for the repository pattern via artisan, which is genuinely useful if that pattern is already your house style. The catch is currency: it targets Laravel 5 and hasn't shipped since 2019, so expect to fork and patch rather than composer require and forget. Because it's dev-time codegen, the risk profile is low — generated classes are yours and the package never runs in production. Proposed path: a half-day spike to (a) confirm it runs on our target version, (b) extract the stubs, and (c) decide whether we fork it or simply copy the stubs into our own make:repository command. My expectation is that copying the stubs wins — we get the convention enforcement without carrying an abandoned dependency — but the spike is cheap enough to settle it with evidence.
