overtrue/laravel-single-session
Prevent concurrent logins in Laravel by limiting each user to a single active session. When a user signs in from a new device or browser, earlier sessions are invalidated automatically, keeping accounts secure with minimal setup.
Consider it only in narrow, low-risk situations:
Look elsewhere — or build in-house — when:
The default recommendation should be: use native Laravel session/auth primitives plus a small in-house implementation, and reserve this package for inherited legacy contexts where the cost of removal exceeds the risk.
For executives: Single-session enforcement is a valuable product capability — it strengthens security, supports enterprise compliance requirements, and can reduce credential sharing in seat-based products. However, this specific package is archived, was last released in 2017, and has negligible adoption. Adding it to a modern product would create dependency and security-review risk for a capability we can implement ourselves with modest effort. Recommendation: fund a small spike to build the feature natively; do not adopt the package.
For engineering: The package enforces one active session per user by invalidating older sessions on new login, with middleware-based enforcement. The pattern is sound, but the implementation is Laravel-5-era and unmaintained. Modern Laravel already provides much of the needed foundation through session authentication middleware and “logout other devices” behavior. The safer path is a thin in-house layer: track session identifiers per user, invalidate prior sessions on login, expose a “sign out other devices” action, and add tests for multi-guard and multi-device cases.
For security/compliance reviewers: Do not treat this package as a control. It has no maintained release or security-response process. If it exists in a legacy system, document it as technical debt, contain its scope, and plan migration to a supported implementation.
