Laravel Passport Cache Token Laravel Package

overtrue/laravel-passport-cache-token

Caches Laravel Passport access tokens so API authentication no longer hits the database on every request. This drop-in package stores token data in your configured cache store, cutting query load and speeding up response times in high-traffic applications.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Framework upgrade roadmap (primary signal of this release). 3.2.0 is a compatibility-only release: it adds Laravel 10 support. If this package sits in our dependency graph, it was previously a hard blocker on a Laravel 9 → 10 migration; this release removes that blocker. Decision supported: green-light the Laravel 10 upgrade, or sequence it now that the constraint is gone.
  • Build vs. buy for a non-differentiating concern. Token validation caching is infrastructure plumbing, not product surface. Buying is defensible because the scope is tiny — but the same smallness means we can vendor/fork it in days if maintenance lapses. Decision: adopt with a documented exit path, not a deep integration.
  • Performance / infra spend. Every authenticated Passport request normally costs a DB read on the token table. Caching that lookup is a lever on p95 auth latency, DB read QPS, and read-replica sizing. Decision supported: "do we need to scale the DB tier this quarter?" — answerable with hit-rate and auth-middleware latency data rather than intuition.
  • Security and compliance posture — the trade-off that needs a named owner. Cached validation means revoked or logged-out tokens can remain accepted until the cache TTL expires. This is a product decision, not a library default: we must state a revocation SLA (e.g., "revocation effective within N minutes") and have security/compliance sign it off, particularly for regulated, enterprise SSO, or multi-tenant contexts.
  • Use cases it unlocks or accelerates. High-volume API surfaces with opaque Passport tokens, mobile clients issuing frequent short calls, service-to-service traffic, and any app where the token table is a measured hot spot.
  • What this release does not change. No new features, no breaking changes, no deprecations. There is no product-facing behavior change to plan around — the decision value is entirely "unblocked upgrade," not new capability.

When to Consider This Package

Consider adopting when:

  • We use Laravel Passport with opaque access tokens and have evidence the token lookup is a hot spot (DB CPU, read QPS, replication lag, or auth-middleware latency in traces).
  • A shared cache (Redis or Memcached) is already operated by the team. Array/file cache in a multi-node deployment produces inconsistent auth outcomes and is a footgun.
  • A revocation delay of seconds-to-minutes is acceptable, or we have an operational purge path for forced revocation (password change, incident response, admin ban).
  • We are on Laravel 10 (now supported) or Laravel 9. Note the support arrived well after Laravel 10 GA — worth probing whether Laravel 11/12 is on the horizon and whether this package will lag again.
  • We can wire it into the auth path with a DB fallback on cache failure, so a cache outage degrades latency rather than availability.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The requirement is immediate revocation ("logout must invalidate in under a second," regulator-mandated kill switches). Caching is structurally the wrong tool.
  • Traffic is modest and the DB is nowhere near saturated — this is premature optimization that adds a stateful dependency to the most security-sensitive code path.
  • We depend on token semantics that need fresh state: scope changes, refresh-token revocation, or custom grants. Cache invalidation must be verified per flow, not assumed.
  • We are moving to stateless/signed tokens (JWT-style) where the DB lookup disappears anyway, making the package redundant.
  • Vendor-risk tolerance is low. The project is effectively single-maintainer, and this release's headline item is a framework-support PR from a first-time contributor. That is a maintenance signal, not a strength signal — mitigate by pinning the version and keeping a fork ready.
  • We are already beyond Laravel 10. Compatibility beyond the versions explicitly claimed is unverified; do not assume it.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives (30 seconds): "This is a small dependency that removes a database lookup from every authenticated API request by caching access tokens. The new release only adds Laravel 10 support — no new features — so its real value right now is that it stops being a blocker for our framework upgrade. Upside is lower auth latency and less database load as traffic grows. The cost is that revoked tokens stay valid until a cache expiry we configure, so we need security to bless that window before we ship it. Low effort, low risk, reversible."

Engineering (the actual work): "Compatibility-only release, no API changes — merge risk is near zero. Install, point it at Redis (not array/file cache), set a TTL that matches an agreed revocation SLA, and make sure cache misses and cache failures fall back to the DB without stampeding it. Validate with: hit rate on token lookups, p95 latency on the auth middleware, and read QPS on oauth_access_tokens before and after. Two standing risks: one maintainer and no verified support past Laravel 10 — so pin the version, and treat the ~small codebase as forkable if it goes stale."

Recommendation to record alongside adoption: proceed if (a) we are upgrading to Laravel 10, and (b) security signs a written revocation window. Otherwise, defer — the DB cost of Passport validation is real but rarely the first thing worth fixing.
