Nova Medialibrary Laravel Package

outl1ne/nova-medialibrary

Integrates Spatie Media Library into Laravel Nova with a ready-to-use upload field for attaching, managing, and previewing media on your Eloquent models. Supports multiple collections, image conversions, responsive images, and drag-and-drop ordering out of the box.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for back-office media handling. This package is thin glue between Laravel Nova (a paid admin panel) and Spatie's laravel-medialibrary. The real "buy" decision is Nova + medialibrary; this field is the cheap last mile that saves your team from writing custom upload UI, validation, and conversion wiring inside Nova resources.
  • Editor autonomy / content-ops roadmap. If your roadmap includes letting non-engineers upload, replace, and attach images and files to records (products, articles, people, documents), this is a low-cost enabler. Every custom admin screen you don't build is a sprint you don't spend.
  • Scope control on "do we need a DAM?" Teams often reach for a digital asset manager when the actual requirement is "editors need to attach and swap files without a deploy." This package supports that narrower requirement cheaply, and deferring a DAM purchase is a legitimate roadmap decision.
  • Media pipeline standardization. Because it sits on top of Spatie medialibrary, adopting it nudges the team toward one convention for conversions, responsive images, and file storage — which makes CDN, image-optimization, and storage-cost decisions easier to reason about later.
  • Prioritization signal for platform investment. If multiple Nova resources need media fields, the marginal cost of adoption approaches zero; that's a strong argument to standardize here rather than approve one-off upload implementations per feature.
  • Not a differentiator. Nothing here is customer-visible product value. Fund it as internal tooling with a maintenance budget, not as a feature bet.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when most of the following hold:

  • You are already committed to Laravel Nova and on a supported Laravel/PHP version. Nova is the dominant cost and constraint; this package adds little on top.
  • You are already using or willing to adopt spatie/laravel-medialibrary as your media model. If you have a different media layer, this field will fight it.
  • The need is admin-side media attachment for internal staff — not public-facing upload, transcoding, or asset search.
  • You have engineering capacity to own it: 46 stars and a single agency maintainer (Outl1ne) means you should plan to pin the version, read the source, and be ready to fork. MIT license makes that legally trivial.
  • Your risk tolerance fits community packages in a non-customer-facing surface. An admin panel breaking is annoying, not an outage.
  • Version cadence looks alive (recent releases), but verify compatibility with your Nova major version in a timeboxed spike before committing — Nova majors move and community fields lag.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on Nova. Use Filament's first-party media/file components, or build directly on medialibrary — do not buy Nova to get this field.
  • You need true DAM capabilities: cross-record asset library search, tagging, usage tracking, rights/expiry metadata, approval workflows, bulk operations. This is a form field, not an asset management system.
  • You need vendor SLAs, security review paperwork, or long-term support guarantees. A single-maintainer MIT package will not clear procurement in regulated contexts.
  • You need heavy image manipulation in-browser (advanced cropping, focal points, art direction, transformations) — validate precisely what the field exposes before promising it to stakeholders; do not assume parity with dedicated tools.
  • Your team would rather own 150 lines of custom Nova field than carry a dependency. For a wrapper this thin, that's a defensible call.
  • You are planning a move off Nova within the roadmap horizon. Don't deepen the commitment.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We can give content and operations staff the ability to manage images and files directly in our admin panel without engineering involvement, using a free, MIT-licensed add-on on top of tools we already run. Cost is essentially zero in license terms and measured in days, not sprints. The trade-off is that it's a small community package maintained by one agency — acceptable for an internal admin surface, but it means we pin the version and treat it as something we can fork and own rather than something we can buy support for. It is infrastructure, not a customer-facing differentiator, and should be funded as such.

For engineering: This is a Nova field that binds Nova resources to Spatie medialibrary collections, so conversions, responsive images, and storage conventions come from medialibrary rather than from bespoke code. Adopt it only if we're standardized on Nova and medialibrary; otherwise it's friction. Recommended path: a one-day spike on a single resource to confirm Nova-version compatibility and that the field supports our actual editor workflows (single vs. multiple, replacement, conversions), then pin the version, document the fork procedure, and assign a named owner. Do not let it spread to resources we plan to migrate off Nova.
