Nova Color Field Laravel Package

outl1ne/nova-color-field

outl1ne/nova-color-field is a Laravel Nova color picker field. Add color selection to your resources with preset palettes, a custom picker, and hex value storage. Swatches render cleanly in forms and detail views, making color management simple and consistent.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit This is a leaf-node UI dependency: a single Nova Field subclass plus a compiled Vue component that renders a color picker and serializes a string (typically hex) into an Eloquent column. It owns no routes, migrations, queues, scheduled jobs, or background processes, and it introduces no new runtime service. Package discovery registers it automatically, so there is no service provider to wire and, for the common case, no config to publish. From a delivery standpoint that is the easiest category of dependency to approve: the blast radius is a form control on an internal admin screen, and the reversibility cost is one line in a fields() method.

Integration feasibility The integration surface is genuinely small — one composer require, one nullable string column on the target model, one Color::make('Brand Color', 'brand_color') line in the resource. There is no cast required, no API contract, and no frontend build change on our side. The realistic work is not plumbing; it is the surrounding discipline we should impose anyway: server-side hex validation in the FormRequest or model, normalization (lowercase, expand 3-digit hex, strip stray #), and a decision about blank vs. null semantics. Budget half a day for a spike including staging verification, not a sprint.

Technical risk Three risks matter to a TPM, and all three are manageable if named up front:

  • Maintenance risk. 26 stars, zero listed dependents, single maintainer, MIT. That is thin evidence of production hardening regardless of release cadence. We would be early adopters, and we — not the ecosystem — would be the ones to notice a break. Acceptable for an internal swatch; unacceptable for a customer-facing surface.
  • Silent failure. Nova field packages ship compiled JS and ride Nova's Vite/Mix pipeline. When a Nova upgrade breaks the component, the typical symptom is a blank input, not an exception — CI stays green and the defect reaches a demo. This needs an explicit upgrade-checklist item, not vigilance.
  • Contract risk. The picker's "hex only" behavior is a client-side promise. Any request that never touched the picker can post anything. The picker must never be the sole guarantee of format.

The offsetting factor is that rollback is a one-line revert: removing the field leaves the column and its data intact and readable as a text field with a hex regex. No migration to unwind.

Key questions

  • Is the target a licensed Laravel Nova instance, and at which major? This package has zero value outside Nova — if we are not on Nova, exclude it and pick a native input.
  • Vite or legacy Mix, and has compatibility been confirmed against our exact Nova version in staging rather than by reading composer.json?
  • Is any foreseeable use customer-facing (tenant brand colors landing in emails, PDFs, public pages)? If yes, this is the wrong control and the decision changes.
  • Does the roadmap need governed palettes, contrast checks, gradients, arrays of colors, or per-locale themes? If so, adopting this must not be used to silently defer that larger product decision.
  • Who owns the fork-and-own fallback, and is it documented before it is needed?

Integration Approach

Stack fit Fit is conditional and binary: Nova present → clean fit; Nova absent → out of scope entirely. Assuming Nova, the package slots in as a commodity form control. The only data-side prerequisite is a nullable string column; avoid char(7), because we will want blank values and will hit 3-digit hex during prototyping. One hex string per attribute — a palette means three columns and three fields, not a JSON blob.

Migration path There is effectively no migration. Nothing to backfill for new columns. For existing free-text or legacy color columns, plan one data-hygiene pass — normalize case, expand 3-digit hex, convert empty strings to null — so the nullable default reads cleanly and existing rows do not render oddly. If we ever need to exit, the fallback is a plain text field with the same regex; the data stays legible.

Compatibility Two compatibility axes: Nova major version and the asset pipeline. Both must be verified in staging, not inferred. Pin the version — exact or ~ — and commit the lock file. If any vendor assets require publishing, that publish step belongs in the deploy script alongside config:clear / view:clear / optimize:clear, and a hard refresh belongs in the debugging runbook.

Sequencing

  1. Spike (half day). Install pinned version, add a column to a low-traffic settings resource, render, save, and read the value back into a Blade layout as a CSS custom property (:root { --brand: ... }). That single loop proves render, persistence, and consumption together.
  2. Harden. Add hex validation on the field and on the FormRequest/rule object, plus a single normalization mutator or observer. One place, not per-resource.
  3. Wrap. Introduce App\Nova\Fields\BrandColor extends Color carrying the rules and help text, so resources reference our class and a Nova major upgrade or abandonment is a one-file swap.
  4. Expand. Only after steps 1–3 are green, roll to status/severity color coding, tag tints, and additional settings fields.
  5. Runbook. Add "open one color field, save it, confirm it renders" to the Nova upgrade checklist and document the text-field fallback in the resource's ADR/history.

Operational Impact

Maintenance Low steady-state cost, with one concentrated risk: we inherit a dependency whose maintenance cadence we do not control. The wrapper class is the mitigation — it converts a fork-or-replace event from a codebase-wide refactor into a single-file change, and under MIT that is an afternoon. Register the dependency as low-criticality and single-maintainer in our inventory so it is triaged correctly when it appears in a scanner report or an upgrade diff.

Support No vendor, no SLA, no security review trail, no named maintainer beyond one individual. For an internal admin swatch that is a fine posture; it disqualifies the package for procurement-grade or regulated surfaces. State that boundary explicitly now, so a later "we already have a color field" argument cannot quietly extend it to a customer surface.

Scaling Scales trivially along the dimension that matters — number of fields. Each additional color is one column and one line; there is no server-side compute, no job, no external call. It does not scale along the governance dimension: a picker cannot enforce a constrained brand palette, run WCAG AA contrast checks on text-over-color, or normalize policy across many fields. If usage spreads past a handful of fields, revisit whether a governed palette control is the actual requirement.

Failure modes

  • Blank input after a Nova upgrade. Most likely failure, and silent. Detection is the checklist item and a staging smoke test, not monitoring.
  • Stale assets after composer update. Mitigated by the publish/clear sequence in the deploy script and a hard refresh before deeper debugging.
  • Malformed data from non-picker paths. Mitigated by server-side validation and one normalization point. Without it, garbage hex reaches the frontend and breaks CSS silently.
  • Package abandonment. Mitigated by version pinning, the wrapper class, and a written fork-and-own owner.

Ramp-up Near zero for developers who have written a Nova field — the API is one line. The learning is organizational, not technical: the upgrade-checklist habit, the validation discipline, and the stated boundary between internal admin and customer-facing use. Plan a short written note in the ADR covering the pin, the wrapper, the fallback, and that boundary; that note is worth more than any amount of additional evaluation of a 26-star picker.
