Filament Calculator Action Laravel Package

osama-dev/filament-calculator-action

A Filament action that opens a calculator modal for numeric fields, letting users perform quick calculations and insert the result directly into forms. Useful for prices, quantities, discounts, and totals.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy on internal admin UX. The calculator itself is trivial to write (an Alpine component with a few operators), but the peripheral work — Filament action wiring, v3/v4 compatibility, modal UX, formatting — is a day or two plus maintenance. This package collapses that into a Composer require, which is a legitimate "buy" decision for a low-differentiation UI affordance.
  • Feature scoping for arithmetic-heavy forms. Order entry, quote/estimate builders, invoice line items, discount and tax previews, timesheet totals, inventory adjustments, expense capture. If any of your admin screens currently end with a user opening a spreadsheet, computing, and retyping the answer, this is a direct fix for a real data-quality problem (transcription error, not calculation error).
  • Roadmap: investing in internal tooling velocity. Adopting small, well-scoped Filament actions is a signal that admin UX is worth incremental spend. This is a cheap way to test whether operators actually value inline computation before you commit build capacity to a dedicated pricing/quoting module.
  • Latency as a product requirement. "Zero Livewire round-trips" is the actual value proposition — not arithmetic, which browsers already do. If your PM-level goal is "forms feel instant on bad networks / mobile in the field," client-side evaluation is the correct architectural stance, and this package encodes it.
  • Scope containment decision. Because it is admin-only and MIT, the blast radius of adoption is one Composer line and a handful of action registrations. That makes it a reversible decision — the right kind to make without a full RFC.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are already on Laravel + Filament v3/v4 and the math lives inside an admin form, not a customer-facing checkout.
  • The calculations are simple arithmetic over sibling form fields (quantity × rate, subtotal − discount). No cross-record lookups, no tax-jurisdiction rules.
  • Your team has limited frontend bandwidth and would otherwise ship a Livewire-based calculator with a visible round-trip.
  • You accept being an early adopter: 14 stars, zero dependents, one maintainer. Budget for pinning the version, reading the source, and forking if it goes stale.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The number is money that leaves the building. Client-side totals are user-editable in devtools; they are a convenience preview, never the source of truth. Server-side recomputation and validation must still exist. If your stakeholders won't accept that, don't go here.
  • You need auditable, compliance-grade calculation (invoicing/tax regimes, decimal precision via bcmath, currency and locale formatting, rounding rules). A UI action is not a calculation engine.
  • Requirements include accessibility conformance, i18n/RTL, or a vendor SLA — none of which a 14-star package promises.
  • You're on Filament v2 or a non-Filament stack, or the formula needs database reads, in which case a custom Livewire field is the honest answer.
  • A generic Alpine snippet in your own form would do the same job with less dependency surface.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: A free, MIT-licensed UI component for our admin panel that lets staff do quick arithmetic inside forms instead of switching to a spreadsheet and retyping results. It removes a known source of data-entry error, adds no infrastructure, no database changes, and no new services. Cost is roughly one Composer line and an afternoon of integration; the decision is reversible.

For engineering: A Filament action that evaluates arithmetic client-side, eliminating Livewire round-trips for calculator interactions. Requires Laravel + Filament v3/v4. It is small-surface, admin-only, and removable without migration. Two conditions of adoption: (1) pin the version and vendor/fork it — adoption signals are thin and there is no maintainer redundancy; (2) treat all computed values as display-only previews and keep server-side recomputation of any persisted or payable figure as the authoritative source. Recommend a one-form spike before rolling it out to money-touching screens.
