ornicar/gravatar-bundle
A lightweight Symfony bundle for integrating Gravatar avatars. It provides a Twig helper and service to generate Gravatar URLs with configurable size, rating, and default image settings, making it easy to add user profile avatars to your templates and services.
gravatar.com/avatar/{md5}" pattern, which is ~30 lines of code and needs no package at all. Treat it as a reference implementation.Consider adopting when:
Look elsewhere — or just build it — when:
creativeorange/gravatar (if you want a package), or laravolt/avatar / DiceBear / Boring Avatars for locally generated initials-and-colour avatars with no third-party request. The Symfony bundle does not apply. To executives: Avatars are a commodity feature that users notice only when they're missing. This package lets us satisfy that expectation for near-zero engineering cost — no image storage bills, no upload flow, no moderation queue, no takedown policy. My recommendation is to adopt the approach (Gravatar URLs with an initials fallback) and not the dependency, because the library is archived and unmaintained. The net effect on the roadmap is that "custom avatar upload" drops off the launch critical path and moves to post-launch, contingent on user demand. Estimated saving: one to two sprints of build plus ongoing storage and moderation overhead.
To engineering: The integration is a Twig helper that emits gravatar.com/avatar/{hash}?s=&d=&r=. That's it. We can reproduce it in an afternoon with our own small service class plus a config block, which gives us control over the fallback chain, size defaults, caching headers, and — importantly — the ability to route requests through our own proxy if privacy review requires it. Do not pull in the abandoned bundle as a production dependency; lift the pattern, own the code, and keep the third-party call behind one interface so we can swap to self-hosted initials avatars without touching templates. Flag the MD5-of-email third-party request to whoever owns our data map before this ships.
