Nova Multiselect Field Laravel Package

optimistdigital/nova-multiselect-field

A searchable multiselect field for Laravel Nova with tag support, relationship-friendly options, and a clean Vue-powered UI. Add multi-value selects to resources and forms while keeping Nova’s native look and feel, with flexible configuration for options and display.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Leaf-level UI field package for Laravel Nova. No service provider bindings, migrations, config publishing, or middleware — it extends the admin layer only and never touches request/response paths in the application runtime.
  • Fit is binary: high value if Nova is already the back-office standard; zero value otherwise. Nova is a commercial first-party license, so the license cost and version pin — not this package — dominate the decision.
  • Solves a real gap: Nova ships Select and BelongsToMany but no native multi-value select with tag-style UX, so teams otherwise hand-roll a custom Vue field or abuse a JSON/Select field.

Integration feasibility

  • composer require + one line in a Resource's fields() method. Realistically a half-day including a UI review; no front-end build step in our pipeline because assets ship pre-compiled.
  • No API, queue, or persistence contract imposed — storage shape is determined by how we configure the field, which is the one thing that must be decided deliberately (JSON column vs. pivot).

Technical risk

  • Vendor rename is the top flag. The package identity moved from optimistdigital/* to outl1ne/*. Confirm on Packagist whether the old name is abandoned/aliased and which name is canonical before pinning; an abandoned alias is a future composer update failure.
  • Nova major-version coupling is the dominant ongoing risk. Nova field packages bundle compiled Vue assets against a specific Nova front-end toolchain; a Nova 4→5 upgrade routinely breaks fields that look source-compatible.
  • Single-maintainer, small-community project (343 stars, 0 Packagist dependents). Zero dependents is normal for Nova leaf fields but still means no peer validation of edge cases.
  • MIT license removes legal friction but also any support obligation.

Key questions

  1. Which Nova versions are declared in composer.json, and is Nova 5 explicitly supported/tested?
  2. Does the field natively support belongsToMany (pivot sync) or only scalar/JSON attributes? This determines the data model.
  3. What is the on-disk serialization — JSON array, delimited string, or relation? Is it stable across releases?
  4. Does it participate in Nova index filtering/search, or is it display-only?
  5. Who maintains it, what is the release cadence, and are there open issues on asset loading or Nova upgrades?
  6. Is the optimistdigital name on Packagist abandoned in favor of outl1ne?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Laravel 9–11 / PHP 8.1+ with Nova 4 or 5 is the expected envelope; verify the actual constraint string rather than assuming. Forge/Vapor/container deploys are unaffected — no binaries, no external services.
  • Only suitable for internal admin surfaces; never expose it on a customer-facing route.

Migration path

  • From a plain text/JSON column: swap the field class, then backfill rows into the exact serialization the field expects (typically a JSON array). Write the backfill as a one-way Artisan command with a dry-run and keep the original column until the field is validated.
  • From a hand-rolled custom Vue field: near drop-in; delete the custom component and its Nova asset registration to avoid duplicate bundles.
  • Toward a proper relation: if selections will ever be queried, joined, or reported on, model it as belongsToMany and use the package purely for input UX — do not persist selections into a JSON blob.

Compatibility

  • Gate on three checks: laravel/nova constraint satisfiable by our pinned Nova version, PHP constraint vs. our runtime, and the field's declared storage/relationship support. Test the rendered field in a browser, not just composer install — asset incompatibility fails silently at runtime.

Sequencing

  1. Spike in a non-production environment on the exact Nova/PHP versions we run.
  2. Decide and document the storage shape (JSON column vs. pivot) with the data team before any code lands.
  3. Write the backfill/migration; run against a restored production snapshot.
  4. Convert one low-traffic Resource end-to-end — form, detail, index, filter — as a canary.
  5. Roll out Resource by Resource; pin the exact version in composer.json with a caret-free constraint.
  6. Add a smoke test that boots Nova and asserts the field asset resolves, so Nova upgrades fail in CI rather than in the admin UI.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Near-zero steady-state code maintenance — no schema, no config, no runtime surface. The real burden is a version-pin obligation: budget roughly 1–2 engineer-days per Nova major upgrade to validate or replace the field, and treat the package as a candidate for in-housing if Nova upgrades start costing more than the field saves.

Support

  • Community-only, MIT, no SLA. Escalation path is GitHub issues on a single-maintainer repo — assume no response guarantee. Mitigation is cheap: the field is small enough to vendor into the repo or replace with a ~200-line custom Nova field if it goes stale. Record that fork trigger explicitly so the decision isn't made under upgrade pressure.

Scaling

  • Rendering cost is negligible at any realistic admin scale. The scaling question is queryability, not throughput: selections stored as JSON cannot be indexed or filtered efficiently in MySQL/Postgres without generated columns, and reports/joins over them become table scans. If anyone will ever ask "show me all records tagged X," the pivot model is mandatory and this field is UX only.

Failure modes

  • Nova upgrade breaks the compiled asset → blank or non-interactive field, visible only in the browser; no server-side error.
  • Serialization drift between releases → silent data corruption on edit-save; guard with a shape assertion in tests.
  • Field is display/input only → index filtering and search silently unavailable, discovered late by ops users.
  • Packagist rename/abandonment → build fails on a future composer update; pinning plus a vendored fallback neutralizes it.
  • Duplicate asset registration alongside an existing custom field → styling/lifecycle conflicts.

Ramp-up

  • Hours for a Laravel developer already fluent in Nova Resources; no new concepts introduced. Non-Nova developers need Nova onboarding regardless of this package.
  • Recommendation: adopt as a scoped admin-UX convenience with a pinned version, a browser-level smoke test, and a documented fork trigger — but only after the storage-shape decision (pivot vs. JSON) is made on reporting requirements, and only after confirming the outl1ne name is the live, maintained Packagist entry.
