Antispam Bundle Laravel Package

omines/antispam-bundle

Omines Antispam Bundle adds configurable spam protection to Symfony forms with honeypot fields, time-based submission checks, blocked-word filtering, and IP/email validation—no CAPTCHA friction. Lightweight, framework-native, and simple to wire into existing form types.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for form-spam defense: This is the "buy" (adopt-and-integrate) option for blocking bot signups, contact-form spam, and comment abuse without adding a CAPTCHA to the funnel. It replaces a bespoke honeypot/time-trap implementation with a maintained library.
  • Conversion-sensitive forms (signup, checkout, lead gen): Because the primary detectors are a hidden honeypot field and a minimum-form-fill-time check, it lets us protect flows where a visible CAPTCHA is known to depress completion rates. That makes it relevant to growth/activation experiments as well as trust-and-safety.
  • Roadmap input — framework fit: Release 0.1.14 includes a fix for Symfony 7 LTS deprecation warnings, confirming the maintainer tracks current Symfony versions. That is decision-relevant if our PHP estate is Symfony-based; it is not evidence of Laravel readiness, so any roadmap item assuming drop-in Laravel support needs validation first.
  • Maintenance-burden accounting: The release is dependency hygiene (CI cache action bump, infection/infection bump) plus a compat fix — no features, no API changes. This tells us the project is in caretaker mode with a small maintainer footprint, which is fine for a low-blast-radius utility but argues against making it load-bearing in a security-critical path.
  • Risk register / dependency policy: Pre-1.0 versioning (0.1.14) means minor bumps can carry breaking changes under semver conventions. This affects our upgrade cadence policy and whether we pin the version.
  • Incident-response playbook: Spam-defense tooling is only useful if it fails open or closed predictably. The choice of this package vs. a managed service (Akismet, Turnstile, reCAPTCHA Enterprise) is partly a decision about whether we own the false-positive support burden.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt it if most of the following hold:

  • The stack is Symfony (or a PSR-compatible PHP app). The package ships as a Symfony bundle with DI configuration and form-type integration. Laravel teams would be porting concepts, not installing the package — a Laravel wrapper or a small in-house implementation of honeypot + time-trap is likely cheaper than adapting this.
  • Spam volume is "nuisance" rather than "adversarial." Honeypot and timing heuristics stop drive-by form-filling bots. They do not stop determined humans, headless-browser farms, or targeted abuse — do not adopt this as the sole control for anything with monetary or account-takeover value.
  • You can tolerate pre-1.0 churn. Pin to an exact version, and treat every upgrade as a potential breaking change requiring a smoke test of the registration and contact flows.
  • You have the capacity to tune thresholds. The minimum-submit-time window needs calibration against real user behavior (accessibility tools, slow typers, password managers autofilling); this is a real configuration and QA cost, not a checkbox.
  • You want zero third-party data egress. No user data leaves your infrastructure, which is a meaningful advantage over hosted CAPTCHA services under GDPR/DPA review.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You are on Laravel. Framework mismatch makes the integration cost dominate the benefit.
  • You need a vendor SLA, guaranteed response times, or an audit trail for abuse decisions. This is a single-maintainer open-source project; the security posture is "reasonable defaults," not "supported product."
  • You need managed reputation/intelligence (IP reputation feeds, ML scoring). A hosted service is the right call.
  • Accessibility compliance is a hard gate and you cannot staff manual review for false positives — any heuristic filter needs a human escape hatch.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: We are evaluating a small open-source PHP library, omines/antispam-bundle, as a low-cost way to cut form spam without putting a CAPTCHA in front of customers. The trade-off is straightforward: it is free, keeps user data in-house, and imposes no friction on legitimate users, but it is a pre-1.0 project with a single maintainer and no commercial support. It suits nuisance-level spam on low-risk forms; it is not a substitute for a managed anti-fraud service on anything involving payments or account takeover. The 0.1.14 release is routine maintenance — dependency updates and a Symfony 7 compatibility fix — so there is no urgent action, and no feature we were waiting on.

For engineering: Version 0.1.14 is a maintenance patch: CI cache action bumped to v5, infection/infection moved to ^0.32.0, and deprecation warnings under Symfony 7 LTS resolved. No new detectors, no API or configuration changes, no breaking changes — a safe patch upgrade from 0.1.13, still worth pinning and regression-testing your form flows given the 0.x version line. Before proposing adoption, spike the actual integration in a branch: confirm Symfony version support, measure configuration surface for the honeypot and timing checks, and define fallback behavior (fail-open) so a misconfiguration cannot silently block real signups. Also flag the Laravel question explicitly — if our target is Laravel, budget for a port, not an install.
