Util Bundle Laravel Package

ns/util-bundle

ns/util-bundle is a lightweight Laravel utility bundle that gathers practical helpers for strings, arrays, and common app tasks. It offers simple, framework-friendly functions to reduce boilerplate, speed up development, and keep your PHP code clean and readable.

Getting Started

  • Confirm it's a Symfony bundle first. ns/util-bundle follows the classic *Bundle convention (NobletSolutions namespace, UtilBundle class under src/ or the repo root). Check composer.json for type: symfony-bundle and the symfony/framework-bundle constraint before assuming it drops into Laravel — it does not. This is a Symfony package.

  • Install via Composer in a Symfony app (Flex will not auto-register a zero-star bundle, so add it manually):

    composer require ns/util-bundle

    // config/bundles.php
    return [
        // ...
        Ns\UtilBundle\UtilBundle::class => ['all' => true],
    ];

  • Where to look first, in this order:

    1. README.md — for the service list and any config tree.
    2. src/DependencyInjection/ (*Extension.php, Configuration.php) — this is the real inventory of what's configurable and what services get registered.
    3. src/Resources/config/services.* (.yaml/.xml/.php) — the actual service IDs, tags, and constructor args. Utility bundles often register services as private and non-autowired; you need the IDs here.
    4. src/ top-level directories — utility bundles typically group into Util/, Service/, Helper/, Twig/, Validator/, Doctrine/.
  • First use case: pull one helper into a controller via autowiring and sanity-check it end to end. For example, if a string/slug helper exists:

    public function show(SluggerInterface $slugger): Response
    {
        $slug = $slugger->slug('Hello World'); // expect "hello-world"
    }

    If autowiring fails, fall back to $container->get('ns_util.slugger') (use the exact ID from services.yaml) to prove the service works before fixing the wiring.

  • Baseline smoke test: run bin/console debug:container --show-private | grep -i util and bin/console debug:config ns_util (adjust the alias to the extension's getAlias() return value). Those two commands tell you whether the bundle actually loaded and what it exposes, which is more reliable than the description "Various Utility Services and Classes."

Implementation Patterns

  • Treat it as a toolbox, not a framework. Utility bundles are collections of small, mostly stateless services and static helpers. The day-to-day win is deleting hand-rolled Str/Arr/Date/Json helpers from your App\Util folder and depending on one maintained set instead.

  • Inject interfaces, not the bundle's concrete classes. If the bundle ships FooInterface, type-hint that in your services and let Symfony's autowiring alias resolve it. This keeps you able to swap in your own implementation later without touching call sites — important given the package's low activity level.

  • Wrap it in a thin application-level adapter for anything business-critical. This is the single most valuable pattern with a zero-star dependency:

    // src/Util/Slugger.php
    final class Slugger
    {
        public function __construct(private readonly \Ns\UtilBundle\Util\Slugger $inner) {}

        public function slug(string $value): string
        {
            return $this->inner->slug($value);
        }
    }

    Now a future replacement of ns/util-bundle is a one-file change, and your tests mock your interface, not theirs.

  • Configuration-driven behavior. If Configuration.php defines a tree, prefer setting values in config/packages/ns_util.yaml over editing vendor files or hardcoding constructor args in services.yaml. Utility bundles commonly expose things like default locale, date format, or allowed HTML tags.

  • Twig and Validator integration go through tags. If the bundle registers Twig extensions or validators, they'll be tagged (twig.extension, validator.constraint_validator). Override the tag or the service definition in services.yaml rather than subclassing if you just need to change one behavior.

  • Reuse across console and HTTP layers. Utility services are the easy part of a shared codebase between Command, Controller, and MessageHandler. Inject the same helper in all three rather than duplicating formatting logic — a common source of drift between CLI output and API responses.

  • Static helpers can't be autowired. For classes with only static methods (common in Util/), use them directly and don't try to register them as services. Reserve DI for the stateful ones (those taking config, a client, or a filesystem).

  • Integration tip — compiler pass for tagging. If you need to register many implementations against the bundle's interface (strategy pattern), add a compiler pass in your app that autoconfigures YourInterface implementations, and let the bundle's addTaggedService-style pattern do the collection.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Assume nothing about maintenance. Zero stars, zero dependents, and a generic description mean no ecosystem pressure to keep it current. Pin the version ("ns/util-bundle": "~1.0" or whatever the tag scheme is) and run composer outdated regularly. If a Symfony major upgrade breaks it, you're the only one fixing it.

  • Service IDs are not the class name. The classic pitfall: Ns\UtilBundle\Util\Slugger may be registered as ns_util.slugger and marked private. Run bin/console debug:container 'Ns\UtilBundle' --show-private to map class → ID before you write any services.yaml overrides.

  • Autowiring may be off for this bundle. Older bundles ship services.yaml without autowire: true / autoconfigure: true. If your app relies on autowiring, add aliases yourself:

    # config/services.yaml
    services:
        Ns\UtilBundle\Util\Slugger:
            alias: ns_util.slugger
            public: true

  • Bundle class location differs between skeleton styles. Some have src/UtilBundle.php, some src/NsUtilBundle.php, some the class at the repo root. Read the actual path before guessing the FQCN in bundles.php.

  • Extension alias mismatch is the #1 "config not loading" cause. The YAML filename (ns_util.yaml) must match Extension::getAlias(), not the bundle name. If debug:config ns_util errors with "no extension able to load the configuration," check getAlias()'s return value.

  • Debugging order when a helper misbehaves: (1) debug:container --show-private to confirm it's a service, (2) dump the constructor args via debug:container ns_util.slugger, (3) if it's a static helper, just read the source — utility classes are usually short, and this is faster than guessing semantics.

  • Locale and timezone are the usual silent bugs. Date/number utilities frequently default to en / UTC from config rather than the request. Set them explicitly in config/packages/ns_util.yaml and assert them in a test; format output that differs between dev and prod is almost always this.

  • Extension points are limited by design. Utility bundles rarely ship events or interfaces for every class. Before you patch vendor code, check for: an interface you can implement and alias, a Configuration.php node you can set, or a service definition you can override in config/services.yaml (yours wins over the bundle's, loaded later). Only then consider a fork — and if you fork, note that composer.json repositories with a vcs entry plus a dev-main constraint is the cleanest stopgap.

  • Don't spread its helper calls across your domain. Keep Ns\UtilBundle\* imports confined to src/Util/ and framework glue. When (not if) the package goes stale, grep -r 'Ns\\UtilBundle' should return a short, tractable list.
