Password Strength Bundle Laravel Package

nowo-tech/password-strength-bundle

Password-strength bundle for PHP/Symfony apps: estimate password quality, enforce configurable rules and policies, and return clear feedback for forms and APIs. Simple service and validator integration with sensible defaults.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for password policy UX. The bundle bundles three things we would otherwise build separately: a configurable strength policy, client-side live feedback, and a server-side validator plus HTML pattern for no-JS fallback. That is roughly 1–3 dev-days of work plus ongoing JS/validation drift — the decision here is whether to adopt the component or replicate it.
  • Roadmap: credential hardening. Directly supports epics such as registration hardening, password reset, change-password, and admin-initiated user creation. If "stronger password policy" is on the roadmap, this is a candidate implementation, not a new initiative.
  • Compliance and security-questionnaire responses. Config-driven minimum length/complexity lets us answer "do you enforce and guide password strength?" and tighten policy without a release cycle — useful for SOC2/OWASP ASVS-style checklists and enterprise procurement.
  • Policy strictness as a product lever, not an engineering project. Because the policy is configuration, we can A/B or graduate from "min length only" to "strength-scored" and measure impact on signup completion vs. reset volume. That converts a security argument into a measurable funnel decision.
  • Consistency across surfaces. One policy definition reused across every password entry point prevents the common failure where registration enforces one rule and reset enforces another.
  • Stack fit is itself a decision. Despite the "Laravel/PHP package" framing, this is a Symfony bundle (FormType extension + Symfony Validator). For a Laravel-first product it is not a drop-in: Laravel uses its own validation and Blade, not Symfony Forms. So the realistic decision is "adopt if we run Symfony Forms," or "harvest the design and implement natively on Laravel."

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when most of the following hold:

  • The service is Symfony 6/7/8 on PHP 8.1+ and password entry goes through Symfony Form types.
  • We want one config source driving both the client-side hint and the server-side rule, and we care about the no-JS pattern fallback.
  • The policy requirements are simple and tunable (length, character classes, strength threshold) rather than bespoke risk scoring.
  • We are willing to treat a low-adoption dependency (0 stars, 0 dependents, single-maintainer signal) as an internal component: pin the version, review the code once, and be prepared to fork or vendor it.
  • Bundle/template hooks (Twig + assets) can be integrated without disturbing our existing form theme.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • The product is Laravel or framework-agnostic — Symfony FormTypes and the Symfony Validator do not carry over. Use Laravel's Password::defaults() / Password rule plus a JS strength meter, or a standalone JS library.
  • We need dictionary/breach-aware scoring (zxcvbn-style entropy, Have I Been Pwned lookups). This bundle is policy-based, not risk-based.
  • We need localized messaging, custom telemetry, or UX beyond the bundle's defaults and don't want to carry template overrides.
  • Policy must be enforced by non-PHP clients (mobile, SPA calling an API) — then the rule belongs in a shared service/API, and this becomes at most a thin Symfony-side wrapper.
  • Supply-chain policy forbids unvetted, near-zero-adoption packages; the maintenance cost of a fork exceeds the savings.

Due diligence flags to record: 0 stars / 0 dependents means no independent production validation; the listed last release date (2026-10-27) is inconsistent with a present-day evaluation and should be verified against the actual tag history before we commit to a version. Confirm the maintainer's release cadence and whether Symfony 8 support is tested, not just declared.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed component that upgrades the weakest link in account security — the password the user chooses — by giving guidance while typing instead of only rejecting bad input after submission. The business case is fewer abandoned signups from confusing validation errors and a defensible answer to security questionnaires, at a cost of a few engineering days. The risk is that it is an unproven project with no visible adopters, so we would pin, review, and own it internally rather than depend on it as a strategic vendor. Recommendation: timeboxed spike, then decide.

For engineering: Drop-in Symfony FormType extension plus a validator, with the policy expressed as configuration and the client-side feedback driven from the same source; server-side validation remains the source of truth, and the HTML pattern gives a graceful no-JS path. Integration is small and backward-compatible by design, but we should add our own test coverage around the policy boundaries, confirm Symfony 8 compatibility against the actual test suite, and avoid coupling our form theme to its Twig blocks. If we are not on Symfony Forms, we do not adopt — we take the pattern (config-driven policy, live feedback, single enforced rule) and implement it against Laravel's validator.

Success measures to attach: password-related form abandonment rate, post-signup reset/forgotten-password volume, and support tickets tagged "password error," tracked before and after any policy change.
