Nova Single Resource Laravel Package

norman-huth/nova-single-resource

A Laravel Nova package that turns a resource into a single-record resource, hiding index and create views so users manage just one entry. Ideal for settings, profiles, or singleton content pages in Nova.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UX pattern: singleton form vs. list-of-one. Nova's default resource shapes assume index → detail → edit around a collection. Many real content objects (site settings, homepage hero, footer, global SEO defaults, a single "About" page) are logically one row. This package forces that decision into the open: do we want admins landing on a list containing exactly one item, or directly on the edit form?
  • Build vs. buy for internal admin tooling. The alternative is a handful of custom Nova resource methods (or a small base class) to suppress the index and redirect to the singleton record. That is roughly a half-day of work for a competent Laravel dev. This package is the "buy" side of that trade — cheap in effort, but you inherit an unmaintained dependency.
  • Roadmap scoping for CMS-lite features. If your near-term roadmap includes editable global settings, marketing copy blocks, or singleton policy pages, the singleton-resource pattern is the plumbing underneath all of them. Deciding on the pattern once lets you ship several of these screens quickly instead of re-litigating the UI each time.
  • Dependency-risk posture. Stars (5), dependents (0), last release (Dec 2022), and archived status are themselves a decision input. This is a "vendor or fork, don't depend" candidate, and it's worth setting a team norm for how such packages enter the codebase.
  • Market-gap signal. The opportunity score is the most interesting number here: it suggests recurring demand for the singleton-resource pattern, paired with an implementation nobody adopted. That is a reasonable justification for an in-house abstraction rather than a third-party one — solve the recurring need, own the ~50 lines.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already running Laravel Nova and have genuinely global singleton models (settings, global config, a single landing page).
  • You want an editing screen in an afternoon and are comfortable vendoring the code into your app or forking it rather than pulling it as a maintained dependency.
  • You want a readable reference implementation to copy the pattern from — the value here is as much as documentation as as a library.

Look elsewhere (or build the small thing yourself) when:

  • You are not on Nova, or your Nova major version postdates December 2022. Compatibility with current Nova/PHP releases is unverified and the package is archived, so assume it will not be fixed if it breaks.
  • You need authorization policies per singleton, multi-tenant or per-user scoping, localization, or media handling — "one record per tenant/user" is a different problem than "one record globally," and this package addresses the latter.
  • Your team has a policy against abandoned dependencies. With zero dependents there is no community to catch regressions, and no security patch path.
  • The requirement is a one-off. A single custom Nova resource is cheaper to own than an unmaintained package plus its upgrade risk.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed helper that makes "settings-style" admin screens fast to build in Laravel Nova — the kind of screen where there is only ever one record to edit. It has real utility as a pattern, but it was archived in 2022 and has no adoption, so I would not put it on our dependency list long-term. My recommendation is to treat it as a head start: spend a few hours absorbing the approach and own the equivalent code in-house, or fork it with a maintainer assigned. Low cost either way, and it keeps an unmaintained package out of our supply chain.

For engineering: Focused, small-surface package for single-record Nova resources. Review the source, confirm compatibility with our Nova and PHP versions, and either vendor it into the app with tests or reimplement the redirect-to-singleton behavior directly. Budget roughly half a day. Do not add it as a floating Composer dependency we don't control.
