Nova Menu Laravel Package

norman-huth/nova-menu

A Laravel Nova tool for creating and managing site menus from the Nova admin panel. Build hierarchical, drag-and-drop menus, link to Nova resources or custom URLs, and render them in your frontend with a simple API.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin IA / navigation roadmap for Laravel Nova back-offices. This package answers a recurring question in internal tooling: should navigation be hard-coded in NovaServiceProvider, or editable by non-engineers at runtime? It enables drag-and-drop menu trees, custom links, and resource groupings without a deploy — a real workflow unlock for ops, content, and support teams.
  • Build vs. buy for admin navigation. The alternative is 2–5 engineer-days building a menus/menu_items schema, a Nova tool UI, and cache invalidation. This package collapses that to an afternoon — but the archived status shifts the real comparison to "fork and own" vs. "build."
  • Whether navigation configurability is a product differentiator. For most B2B SaaS admin panels it is table stakes, not differentiation. That argues for the cheapest credible option and against bespoke investment — which is precisely the case this package makes, if the maintenance risk is priced in.
  • Vendor/stack commitment. Adoption is only meaningful if you have already standardized on Nova (a paid, licensed product). This is a compounding decision: it locks admin UX investment into Nova's release cadence and into a third-party, unmaintained add-on.
  • Multi-tenant and role-scoped admin surfaces. Menu-per-tenant or menu-per-role is a common requirement for client portals and reseller dashboards; the package's data model supports it, which informs whether to model tenancy in navigation at all.
  • Not supported: public-site or headless navigation, sitemap generation, or API-delivered menu payloads for a frontend. This is admin-panel-only. Do not let it drift onto a customer-facing roadmap.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already running Laravel Nova and have no intention of leaving it. Outside Nova it has essentially zero transferable value.
  • Non-developers genuinely need to reorder and relabel admin navigation — a support lead onboarding a new department, an ops team spinning up a tenant, a consultancy handing a client a back-office.
  • The blast radius of breakage is small and internal. If the menu breaks, an admin is inconvenienced, not a customer.
  • You accept the operating model: treat this as source code you are adopting, not a dependency you are consuming. Pin the version, vendor it, add your own tests, and assign an owner.
  • You are on a Laravel/Nova version the last release (Feb 2025) actually supports, and you can hold that line for the next 12 months.

Look elsewhere — or build — when:

  • Not on Nova. Non-negotiable; there is no path to reuse.
  • You require active maintenance or security patching. The repository is archived and has zero dependents — no downstream ecosystem pressure, no community patch velocity, and no one obligated to fix a Laravel or Nova upgrade break. That risk lands entirely on you.
  • Adoption scale is more than a couple of internal apps. At 21 stars and no dependents, you are not joining a community; you are inheriting a codebase. Budget the fork explicitly or decline.
  • You need supported, multi-language, versioned menu management with audit trails, scheduled publishing, or A/B-tested navigation. Expect to extend substantially, at which point "build" wins on total cost.
  • You need menu delivery to a public frontend or mobile client. Wrong layer entirely.
  • Procurement or compliance requires vendor SLAs, SBOMs, or a maintained upstream. Archived status will fail that gate.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We have a small, bounded admin-panel need — letting non-engineers edit the back-office navigation — and there is an existing open-source component that does it. The catch is that it is archived and unmaintained, with negligible community adoption, so adopting it means we take ownership of roughly a few hundred lines of code rather than buying a supported product. The recommendation is to treat it as a starter kit, not a vendor: adopt only if we are staying on Laravel Nova, fork it into our own repository, and fund a small one-time hardening effort. If we are not committed to Nova, or if this needs to survive more than a year of framework upgrades unattended, we should build the equivalent ourselves — it is a one-to-two-week job — and avoid inheriting abandoned code. Net: low cost, low risk if scoped to internal tooling with a named owner; a liability if adopted passively.

For engineering (the framing that matters): The package is a Nova tool that adds a menu builder — schema, admin UI, and rendering. It removes a few days of scaffolding work. Because upstream is archived, our first commit must be a fork: pin the dependency, vendor the source, add regression tests around menu resolution and caching, document the Nova/Laravel version ceiling we support, and record an explicit upgrade-or-replace trigger (e.g., the next major Nova release). The real cost is not adoption, it is ownership, and we should only sign up for it if the feature is genuinely needed and someone is named as its maintainer.

Recommendation: Proceed only under three conditions — Nova is a committed part of the stack, the need is internal-only, and a maintainer is assigned. Otherwise, spend the one-to-two weeks to build it in-house and keep the roadmap free of an unmaintained dependency.
