Nova Bbcode Textarea Laravel Package

norman-huth/nova-bbcode-textarea

A Laravel Nova field that adds a BBCode-ready textarea to your admin forms, making it easy to edit and manage BBCode-formatted content within Nova resources. Lightweight and simple to integrate into existing packages.

Product Decisions This Supports

Primary decision: build vs. buy for a BBCode authoring field in a Laravel Nova admin panel. If a product already stores content as BBCode — a legacy forum, an inherited comment/message table, a CMS whose downstream consumers parse BBCode — the question is whether to buy a ready-made Nova field or build a small custom field. This package is the "buy" option, and its archived status effectively answers the question: build, or fork.

Secondary decisions this package informs:

  • Content format roadmap. A maintained BBCode field would reduce the cost of staying on BBCode. An archived one raises the effective cost of not migrating to Markdown/HTML, so it becomes a data point in the "migrate the content format" business case.
  • Admin surface scope. It tells you the BBCode editing need is confined to Nova (internal operators, moderators, support staff) rather than end-user-facing forms — a much smaller, lower-risk scope to justify.
  • Dependency policy enforcement. Zero stars, zero dependents, and a 2022 final release make this a clean worked example for a "no unmaintained dependencies in production" rule; useful precedent when socializing that policy.
  • Vendor/fork budget sizing. If BBCode must stay, the decision shifts to "fork and own it." That is a small, bounded engineering task (a Nova field wrapping a textarea plus a BBCode parser), which is worth estimating before anyone argues for a heavier solution.

What it does not support: any decision about public-facing rendering. The field is an input widget; BBCode-to-HTML sanitization is a separate risk surface and must be decided independently.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it (narrowly) only when all of these hold:

  • The stack is Laravel + Nova and you are pinned to a PHP/Laravel generation contemporary with the mid-2022 release.
  • The field is used exclusively in a trusted, internal admin UI — operators, moderators, support — never exposed to untrusted end users.
  • BBCode is an unavoidable legacy format with a migration already on the roadmap, so you need a stopgap measured in weeks or months, not years.
  • You are prepared to vendor the source into your repo and own it — treat it as a code sample, not a dependency. MIT license makes that legally clean.
  • You have read the README's maintained-alternatives list and confirmed none fit; the archive notice is itself a pointer to successors, and those should be evaluated first.

Look elsewhere — usually the right call — when:

  • You need any maintenance guarantee: security patches, framework-version compatibility, or issue response. There is none. The repository is archived and no further releases are coming.
  • Your Laravel/Nova version postdates 2022. Nova's field API and front-end tooling have moved; expect breakage you must fix yourself.
  • You want ecosystem validation. Zero stars and zero dependents means no third party has exercised this in production — there is no signal, positive or negative, and no community to consult when it fails.
  • Output ever reaches end users. BBCode parsers are a classic XSS vector; an unmaintained parser in a user-content path is a finding waiting to happen.
  • The requirement is genuinely just "a textarea with a formatting toolbar." A custom Nova field is a few hours of work and removes the archival risk entirely.

Net PM read: this is a reference implementation, not a candidate dependency. Budget it as a fork cost, not a procurement decision.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives — one line: The only off-the-shelf option for this BBCode admin field was archived in 2022 with no maintainers and no adopters, so we are not adding it as a dependency; we will either spend a few engineering days building the field ourselves or accelerate the move off BBCode entirely.

The substance behind that:

  • Risk is asymmetric and unpriced. Adopting it costs nothing today and creates an unowned component in our stack tomorrow. When it breaks against a future Nova release, we pay for the fix regardless — so we may as well own the code from day one and skip the illusion of "buying."
  • The real cost is small either way. This is a text field with a toolbar, not infrastructure. Building it is a bounded, well-understood task; the build-vs-buy calculation here is not close.
  • The interesting decision is the content format, not the widget. Supporting BBCode indefinitely means every future editor, search index, and API has to speak BBCode. If BBCode is legacy, the honest roadmap item is migration to a modern format, and this widget is a stopgap that should be scoped and time-boxed as such.
  • Security owns the caveat. Whatever we choose, BBCode-to-HTML conversion on any user-supplied content needs sanitization we control. That requirement is independent of this package and should be tracked separately.

Recommendation: Do not adopt. Use the MIT-licensed source as a starting point if BBCode editing is needed within the quarter; otherwise prioritize the format migration and skip the field work entirely. If someone asks why we passed on a free package — it was free in the way an unmaintained dependency always is.
