Folio Laravel Package

nonoesp/folio

Folio is a Laravel package for adding a portfolio to your application. It provides models, migrations, and helpers for managing projects and media, letting you publish and organize portfolio content quickly without building the foundation from scratch.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for content-driven sites. Folio is a credible third option between hand-rolling Blade routes and licensing a full CMS (Statamic, Craft, Contentful): it gives you a content model plus custom templates inside the Laravel app you already run.
  • Shipping small content properties fast. The clearest use case is blogs, portfolios, docs, launch and campaign pages — sites where a developer owns templates end to end, traffic is modest, and no editorial team is waiting on a WYSIWYG.
  • De-risking content architecture. Because templates and content live in your repo, Folio is a cheap way to validate a page/post/template model before committing budget to a heavier platform. Content stays portable, so the exit cost is a migration, not a rewrite.
  • Roadmap input on "do we need a CMS at all?" If Folio covers the authoring needs of one site segment (developer-authored marketing pages, internal docs), it defers investment in an internal CMS or enterprise content contract.
  • Risk register entries. NOASSERTION license, 0 dependents, ~100 stars, effectively single-maintainer: this is an evaluate and prototype candidate, not a platform standard.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt for evaluation when:

  • You are a Laravel/Blade shop and the people editing content are engineers or technical writers comfortable with files and Git.
  • The target is a low-traffic, non-transactional site with no uptime SLA, where template flexibility matters more than an admin UI.
  • You are willing to own the code — read it, pin the version, vendor it, and accept a bus factor of one.
  • The license clears legal. NOASSERTION is a hard gate for commercial use; do not standardize before counsel confirms terms.
  • You have benchmarked it against the real alternatives: hand-rolled Blade + Markdown, Jigsaw, Statamic, or a headless CMS.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Non-technical editors need a UI, roles, or workflow — this is a developer tool.
  • You need vendor support, an SLA, security review artifacts, multi-tenancy, or an ecosystem of plugins.
  • You need localization at scale, e-commerce, or strict SEO/performance guarantees at high traffic.
  • The license cannot be resolved — walk away rather than absorb the ambiguity.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives. A small open-source Laravel package that lets our existing team ship content sites — blogs, docs, landing pages — with custom templates, no CMS license, and no new platform to operate. Cost is near zero and the exit is cheap because content stays in portable files we control. Two caveats carry the decision: the license is not clearly declared, so legal sign-off is a precondition, and it is a single-maintainer project with no downstream users — we would be adopting and owning it, not riding a community. Recommendation: authorize a one-to-two week spike on a low-risk property; do not standardize until the license clears and the spike ships a real page.

Engineering. Laravel-native, Blade-templated, and small — easy to read, fork, and debug inside our current CI and deploy pipeline, with no new runtime or service to babysit. The trade-offs are explicit: zero dependents means no de facto battle-testing from the wild, so pin the version, vendor the code, and write our own smoke tests around routing and rendering. Keep content in markdown and templates thin so a future swap to Statamic or Jigsaw is a template migration rather than a rewrite.
