Translation Editor Bundle Laravel Package

nercury/translation-editor-bundle

Nercury Translation Editor Bundle adds an in-browser editor for Symfony translations, letting developers and translators view and update messages without leaving the application. It integrates with Symfony's translation system to simplify managing locale files.

Getting Started

  • Install via Composer: composer require <vendor>/<package> — v0.1.4 is still pre-1.0, so pin the version (^0.1.4) and review release notes before upgrading.
  • Publish any config/assets if the package provides them: php artisan vendor:publish --provider="..." (check the README for the exact provider or tag).
  • Run composer dump-autoload after upgrading. v0.1.4 adds PSR-4 autoloading, so this ensures new class mappings are registered.
  • Look first at the package service provider and routes file to see how the translation editor is mounted (commonly a configurable route such as /translations).
  • First use case: open the editor in the browser, select a locale/file tab, and make a small edit to confirm read/write access to lang/ or resources/lang/. v0.1.4 flags errored translation editor tabs, so use that visual indicator to spot broken files immediately.

Implementation Patterns

  • Use the browser UI for day-to-day translation edits, then commit the resulting lang/ changes through your normal Git workflow.
  • Align the package's scan paths with your existing translation directory. Avoid running multiple translation-management packages over the same files.
  • Adopt an error-triage workflow: after merges or deploys, open the editor and check for flagged tabs. Fix syntax errors, missing keys, or malformed arrays before they reach users.
  • If you need custom tabs or validation, look for documented extension points (events, view components, tab registries). With PSR-4 autoloading in place, class overrides are more predictable, but confirm the namespace before binding replacements.
  • Pair UI edits with Laravel cache commands. After changing translations, run php artisan optimize:clear or at least php artisan view:clear if updates do not appear.
  • Keep automated validation in CI. The errored-tab flag is a human-facing UI aid; use your own linter or tests for programmatic translation checks.

Gotchas and Tips

  • v0.1.x is early-stage software. Expect breaking changes; avoid floating version constraints in production.
  • The PSR-4 change in v0.1.4 can break custom class extensions that relied on classmap or non-PSR-4 paths. Run composer dump-autoload -o, verify namespaces, and clear Laravel caches with php artisan optimize:clear.
  • Errored tab flags are likely front-end only. Do not depend on them as a validation API; add your own checks for CI.
  • If tabs remain flagged after editing, check file permissions and whether the web server user can write to the translation directory. Also verify PHP array vs. JSON translation format consistency.
  • After upgrading, republish front-end assets if the package ships compiled JS/CSS, and hard-refresh the browser. The errored-tab UI may depend on updated assets.
  • If the editor route disappears, clear route and config caches: php artisan route:clear and php artisan config:clear.
  • Prefer publishing config and using documented extension hooks over editing vendor files. With PSR-4, custom bindings in a service provider are usually cleaner, but check the package's interfaces first.
