Gazette Laravel Package

naifmhd/gazette

Gazette is a Laravel package for adding a lightweight blog or news section to your application. It ships with models, migrations, and routes for writing, publishing, and displaying articles, so you can get a simple content feed up and running with minimal setup.

Getting Started

naifmhd/gazette is a pre-1.0 Laravel package, so the first step is not composer require — it's reading the diff. v0.7.0 shipped with an empty changelog (a bare compare link, no described changes), so before you adopt or upgrade, open https://github.com/naifmhd/gazette/compare/v0.6.0...v0.7.0 and scan the commits and any changed README/UPGRADING files yourself. In a 0.x line, a minor bump is a legitimate place for breaking changes, and this release gives you nothing to go on.

Once you've confirmed the surface area:

  1. Require it with a tight constraint — "naifmhd/gazette": "0.7.*" rather than ^0.7 — so a future 0.8 with a silent API change can't land in a composer update.
  2. Publish and read the config before touching code: php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Naifmhd\Gazette\GazetteServiceProvider" (check php artisan vendor:publish output for the exact tag — packages of this shape usually ship separate gazette-config and gazette-migrations tags). The config file is the fastest map of what the package actually does; option names and defaults tell you more than the README usually does.
  3. Run migrations and confirm the schema suits you before you write data into it.
  4. Build exactly one end-to-end item — a single Gazette document/issue rendered through a throwaway route — before integrating anything else. For a package at 0.7, you want to see the happy path work on your Laravel version and PHP version early, not after you've wired it into three places.

The first real use case is almost always: take content you already have (an Eloquent model, a markdown file, an API payload), push it through Gazette, and render the result. Do that in a route closure or an artisan command first. If that requires fighting the package, you've learned something cheap.

Implementation Patterns

Wrap the package, don't sprinkle it. Gazette is at 0.7 with an opaque changelog. Put it behind one or two of your own classes — a GazetteService or a small interface — and let the rest of your app depend on that. When 0.8 renames something, you edit one file instead of grepping app/.

Config-first, then code. Anything the config file exposes (driver, storage path, formatting, queues) should be set in config/gazette.php and referenced via config(), not hardcoded at call sites. This is also how you'll survive an upgrade: if behaviour changes, the diff usually shows up as a new config key with a default that preserves—or quietly breaks—the old behaviour.

Queue anything that renders or fetches. If generation touches the filesystem, an HTTP call, or an image pipeline, dispatch it. This keeps the package out of your request cycle and makes failures retryable. Pair it with a scheduled command for anything recurring (digests, exports, cache warming).

Use it as a read model, not a source of truth. Keep your own models authoritative and treat whatever Gazette produces as derived output you can regenerate. If the package's tables get a breaking migration in a future 0.x, you re-run your generator rather than migrating data you can't recreate.

Test around it, not through it. For feature tests, either bind a fake of your wrapper in the container or — if the package ships fakes/assertions — use those. Avoid asserting against the package's internal output format in your test suite; it's the most likely thing to change between 0.x minors. Assert on your wrapper's contract instead.

Local development: seed a handful of representative records in a seeder so anyone on the team can migrate:fresh --seed and see Gazette output immediately. Cheap, and it catches upgrade breakage the moment someone runs it.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Empty release notes are the headline issue here. v0.7.0's notes are a compare URL and nothing else. Treat the diff as the changelog. If you're upgrading from 0.6, that diff review is the whole upgrade plan.
  • Pre-1.0 semver means ^0.7 is a liability. Caret on 0.x allows 0.8, 0.9 — versions explicitly permitted to break. Pin to 0.7.* and upgrade deliberately, in a branch, with your test suite green.
  • config:cache will bite you. Config changes need php artisan config:clear locally and a cache rebuild in deploy. A published config that you've edited but never re-cached (or never cleared) produces behaviour that looks like a package bug and isn't.
  • Republish after upgrading. Published config files and migrations are your copies now — a new package version can't update them. After bumping, diff the package's config/gazette.php and migration stubs against your published versions. New keys that your copy lacks fall back to package defaults, which is sometimes fine and sometimes the source of a subtle regression.
  • Laravel/PHP version matrix. Check the composer.json constraints in the 0.7.0 tag against your app's actual versions before assuming compatibility. Small packages often widen or narrow this quietly in a minor release.
  • Debugging order when something breaks: (1) config('gazette') in tinker to confirm what's actually loaded, (2) check whether the published config is stale versus the package's current stub, (3) reproduce in a fresh minimal route. Reaching for the package internals should be step four, not step one.
  • Extension points to look for before forking: publishing tag overrides, a config-selected driver/strategy, container bindings, and any Macroable or event hooks. If none of these cover your case, raise it upstream — but with the project at 0.7 and changelogs like this one, assume you may need to fork or vendor the package. Wrap it accordingly and keep that exit cheap.
