Crud Generator Laravel Package

mwsimple/crud-generator

A Laravel CRUD generator that scaffolds resource functionality—models, migrations, controllers, and views—from your database or definitions, reducing boilerplate so you can build admin panels and data management screens faster.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. generate for admin tooling. CRUD scaffolding is a recurring roadmap line item ("internal admin panel," "back-office for support team"). This package is a useful reference point for the floor of what code generation buys you — controllers, forms, list/detail views, basic validation — which is exactly the data needed to decide between hand-building, buying (Nova/Filament/Backpack), or investing in in-house generators.
  • Feature scoping and effort estimation. It shows the minimum viable CRUD surface (index/create/edit/delete, form types, pagination, search) so a PM can scope an internal-tools epic before engineering does detailed design.
  • Roadmap prioritization. CRUD screens are commodity work. Evidence that a generator can produce them in minutes supports deprioritizing them against differentiators, and reallocating engineering capacity accordingly.
  • Prototype and discovery use case. For a throwaway data-entry UI during customer discovery or an internal spike, generated CRUD shortens time-to-demo. This is the one scenario where a stale generator is still a legitimate, low-stakes option.
  • Risk register input. 15 stars, 0 dependents, last release 2016-10. Any proposal that names this as a dependency should be flagged on the roadmap as unmaintained third-party risk, not silently accepted.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only under narrow, non-production conditions:

  • The target application is legacy Symfony (2.x/3.x) on old PHP, and this bundle's conventions already match the codebase — note that the "Bundle" naming and repository structure indicate a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package. On a Laravel target this is an ecosystem mismatch, not a preference call.
  • You need a one-off scaffold to be generated and then owned/vendored by your team, with no expectation of upstream fixes.
  • You are doing a time-boxed internal prototype where the output is disposable.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Laravel is the target. Use Laravel Nova, Filament, Backpack, or Infyom/Blueprint generators — actively maintained, PHP 8+, tested, documented.
  • Symfony is the target but the app is modern. Use Symfony MakerBundle or API Platform instead; they are the maintained successors to this class of tool.
  • The system is production-facing, security-sensitive, or audited. No releases since October 2016 means no security patching and no PHP 8 compatibility guarantees. Total cost of ownership (forking, patching, testing) almost certainly exceeds the generator's savings.
  • You need more than classic CRUD — API scaffolding, authorization policies, audit trails, or test generation. This package does not address those.
  • You require community support or hiring leverage. With 15 stars and zero dependents, there is no talent pool and no Stack Overflow corpus.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: We evaluated mwsimple/crud-generator as a candidate to accelerate internal admin screens. It is a permissively licensed (MIT) CRUD generator, but it is effectively abandoned — last release in October 2016, minimal community, no downstream dependents, and it targets Symfony rather than our Laravel stack. Adopting it would trade a short-term scaffolding saving for long-term maintenance and security exposure we would own entirely. Recommendation: do not adopt. CRUD boilerplate is commodity work; the strategic value sits in the differentiated product surface. I recommend a short evaluation of a maintained alternative (Nova/Filament or MakerBundle depending on stack) rather than committing engineering time to reviving this one.

For engineering: Treat this repository as a design reference, not a dependency. It is instructive for how to structure a generator (field metadata → controller/route/form/view templates) if we ever build in-house scaffolding. Concretely: no releases in ~9 years, no CI signal, no test coverage we can rely on, and the "Bundle" packaging confirms Symfony lineage. Any team that still wants it should fork it, pin it, and accept full ownership — and we should record that decision in the architecture risk log.
