Laravel Balance Laravel Package

mreduar/laravel-balance

mreduar/laravel-balance adds balance and transaction tracking to Laravel Eloquent models. It provides a simple API for crediting and debiting accounts, recording balance history, and managing wallet-style ledgers for users, teams, or other models. Useful for credits, rewards, payments, and account b...

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for balance primitives. Wallets, promo credits, loyalty points, referral bonuses, trial allowances, and in-app currency all reduce to the same mechanic: a numeric balance on a model plus an append-only history of why it changed. This package offers exactly that (trait attach, credit/debit/set/reset, positive/zero checks, per-movement transaction records). If balance is a supporting mechanic rather than the product, buying beats building.
  • Roadmap sequencing and capacity. Adopting it converts a multi-sprint "design a credits schema, write service layer, backfill tests" item into an install-and-wrap task, freeing capacity for the actual differentiating feature. Conversely, if the ledger is the differentiator, this is the wrong trade and the roadmap should fund an owned implementation.
  • Feature scoping for experiments. Because balances attach to any Eloquent model via a trait, you can run cheap product experiments — "grant 50 credits on signup," "spend points on X," "reset allowance monthly" — without a new schema design per experiment. That lowers the cost of testing monetization and retention mechanics, and raises the number of experiments a small team can run.
  • Support and finance-operations decisions. A per-movement transaction row answers "why is my balance 30?" in a support ticket without engineering. That is a real operational decision: it determines whether balance disputes are self-service or an escalation to the dev team.
  • Dependency risk posture. 9 stars, a single maintainer, and a last release of October 2023 are the material facts here, not the feature list. This supports classifying the dependency as "small community package, unproven at scale, likely to be internally owned if it becomes load-bearing" — which in turn drives the decisions to pin the version, vendor/fork it if abandoned, and put it behind an internal interface.
  • Architecture decision: abstraction boundary. The strongest PM-relevant call is to consume this behind our own BalanceService-style interface rather than calling the package directly from domain code. That preserves the buy decision today and the option to replace it with a first-party ledger or a heavier accounting library later, without touching feature code. It's the cheapest insurance against the bus-factor risk.
  • Decisions this package does not settle — flag them as product questions. Multi-currency support, negative-balance policy (is overdraft allowed, and for whom?), refunds and reversals, idempotency of grants, and how balances are reconciled against anything financial are all product decisions. The package supplies mechanics; the policy is ours.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • Balance is a supporting mechanic — engagement points, internal credits, quotas, trial allowances, non-monetary tokens — not the movement of real money.
  • The semantics you need are genuinely simple: increment, decrement, set, reset, check positive/zero. No holds, reservations, escrow, partial captures, or expiry.
  • You are Laravel-native, single-service, and value framework-idiomatic integration (trait, migrations, config) over generality.
  • The team has no ledger specialist and the honest alternative is either nothing shipped or a hand-rolled table with no history and no tests. This package with tests around it is better than that.
  • You can wrap it behind an internal interface and pin the version, so a future swap or fork is a contained change.
  • You're validating a mechanic before investing — prototype/MVP stage where speed dominates durability.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Real funds move: payouts, marketplace balances, stored-value wallets, anything a regulator, auditor, or finance team will examine. You need double-entry accounting, idempotent operations, immutable audit logs, and reconciliation — not a balance column with a history table.
  • Concurrency matters. Two simultaneous debits against one balance is the classic failure mode; verify the package's transaction/locking story or plan to serialize writes yourself.
  • You need money-grade numeric handling. Confirm whether balances are stored as integer minor units or floats — floats are a stop-ship for currency.
  • You need multi-currency, expiry, holds, tiered rules, or granular per-transaction permissions.
  • Uptime or an SLA is contractual; a single-maintainer package with a year-plus release gap and 9 stars cannot carry that.
  • Your stack spans non-Laravel services and balances must be authoritative outside PHP.

Verify before committing: supported Laravel/PHP range in composer.json; whether the balance is a stored column or derived from transactions (and what happens when they disagree); the transaction table schema and indexes; how concurrency is handled (DB transaction, row lock, or nothing); the numeric column type; whether migrations and config are publishable and reversible; test coverage and whether CI runs a version matrix; and the practical bus factor — is there any path to a fix if the maintainer disappears?

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: We have a recurring need for balance-style mechanics — credits, points, allowances. Building that properly (schema, history, safe increment/decrement, tests) is a multi-sprint cost we'd pay repeatedly for each new feature. This package provides the mechanics for the price of an integration task, which lets us test monetization and retention ideas this quarter instead of next. The deliberate constraint: we will not put real money through it. It sits behind our own interface, so if it becomes important or the maintainer disappears, we replace it without rewriting features. Low cost, low commitment, reversible — and honest about the risk: it's a small, single-maintainer package we'd effectively be adopting as our own responsibility if it becomes load-bearing.

For engineering: Treat it as a thin, framework-native ledger trait — attach balance to any model, credit/debit/set/reset, every change recorded as a transaction row. It gives us the audit trail for free. Before rollout, confirm four things: the Composer support matrix against our pinned Laravel/PHP; whether the balance is a stored column or derived (and how drift is detected); the numeric type (integer minor units preferred, floats unacceptable); and the concurrency story under simultaneous debits. Wrap it in an internal service interface, pin the version, and add our own tests for rounding, concurrent writes, and negative-balance policy — those are our obligations regardless of the package.

Framing to avoid: Don't present this as a payments or accounting solution, and don't let "it tracks transactions" get heard as "it's an auditable ledger." It isn't double-entry, it doesn't handle currency, and 9 stars plus a stale release means we, not the maintainer, own the risk the moment it becomes core. The pitch is "cheap, reversible speed on non-critical balance mechanics" — not "we've solved balances."
