Secure Array Files Laravel Package

movex-ukraine/secure-array-files

A PHP package for securely storing arrays in files. It persists array data to disk while guarding against unsafe unserialization, offering Laravel apps a simple file-backed alternative to databases or caches for configuration and small datasets.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Niche feature delivery, not platform strategy. This is a single-purpose Laravel Nova field: it stores uploaded files as an array of objects on a model attribute and lets admins download them via a response. It supports "we need multi-file upload + download in the Nova admin panel" decisions, not core product architecture.
  • Build vs. buy tilts toward "buy" only if you already run Nova. The scope is small enough that an in-house field is a realistic alternative (a few hundred lines of PHP); the package is worth it only if it saves a sprint of Nova field plumbing and the security claims hold up.
  • Roadmap impact is limited to internal tooling. Because it requires Laravel Nova (a paid, licensed product), this affects admin/back-office roadmaps, not customer-facing surfaces. Treat it as an internal ops enabler.
  • Use cases it plausibly serves: attaching multiple documents/attachments to a Nova resource (contracts, invoices, KYC docs, media assets), exposing them for download in the admin UI, and keeping the raw file payload as structured data rather than a single serialized column.
  • Do not treat "secure" as a verified property. The release note asserts secure storage, but v1.0.0 ships with no linked documentation, changelog detail, or test evidence. Any decision to rely on it for regulated or sensitive documents must be gated behind our own review (path traversal, authorization on download routes, MIME/extension validation, storage disk exposure).

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following are true:

  • You are on Laravel with a licensed Nova installation and this field fills a specific admin gap.
  • You need an array-of-objects file attribute with per-file metadata, plus a download endpoint, and you want it in days rather than weeks.
  • You have engineering capacity to audit the download response path (authorization, signed URLs or policy checks, storage disk isolation) before it touches production data.
  • The package's maintenance signals check out at evaluation time — v1.0.0 is the first release, so review commit cadence, issue responsiveness, Laravel/Nova version support matrix, and whether tests exist in the repo.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not using Nova — a plain Laravel or Filament implementation will be a better fit and avoids the Nova license dependency.
  • You need files in a customer-facing flow, CDN delivery, image transforms, virus scanning, or retention/compliance policies; those are better served by a dedicated media library (e.g. Spatie Media Library) plus object storage.
  • You cannot tolerate single-maintainer risk for a component sitting on top of sensitive file storage.
  • The array-of-objects schema is the only draw — a JSON column plus a custom cast and a Nova File field may cover it with zero third-party code.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A small, low-cost open-source add-on for our admin panel that lets operations staff upload and download multiple files per record instead of one at a time. It only applies if we are already paying for Nova, so there is no new vendor spend. The upside is a few days of admin tooling saved; the risk is that it is a brand-new, single-maintainer package, so I recommend a time-boxed spike, not a commitment. It does not change our product roadmap.

To engineering: v1.0.0 of a Nova field that saves files as an array of objects and serves downloads from a response. Scope is narrow and the implementation surface is small enough to vendor or reimplement if needed. Before adoption, please confirm: authorization on the download response, storage disk and visibility settings, validation of file type/size, Nova and Laravel version compatibility, and test coverage. If any of those are unclear, plan to fork the download logic in-house while reusing the field UI.
