Probe Laravel Package

morcen/probe

morcen/probe is a lightweight Laravel/PHP package that adds probing utilities to inspect and diagnose application behavior. It helps developers surface runtime details, debug issues faster, and monitor key points in their code with minimal configuration and a simple, expressive API.

Product Decisions This Supports

Important context for this release: v0.0.5 shipped with no human-readable changelog — the only artifact is a diff link spanning v0.0.3 → v0.0.5. Two releases inside the 0.0.x line, with no documented feature, fix, or breaking-change notes, is itself the most decision-relevant signal: this package is pre-stable, iterating quickly, and does not yet maintain release communication a product team can plan against.

That constrains what this package can support today:

  • Build vs. buy for a diagnostics/probing layer. A package like this is a candidate to replace internal one-off debugging or instrumentation code. But with no documented behavior change between v0.0.3 and v0.0.5, you cannot scope migration effort from the release notes alone. Treat "buy" as defer until a spike produces evidence.
  • Roadmap placement: now vs. post-1.0. Given the version cadence, the correct PM decision is to place this in a timeboxed evaluation lane, not a delivery lane. Nothing here justifies committing a sprint.
  • Dependency policy exception. Adopting a 0.0.x dependency requires an explicit exception to standard versioning policy (no semver guarantees; 0.0.x bumps may break anything). This is a governance decision, not just a technical one.
  • Use-case fit: internal and developer-facing surfaces only. Non-customer-facing tooling, local/staging environments, and engineering-productivity work are the defensible scope. Production customer paths are not, on current evidence.
  • Evaluation scope definition. The immediate actionable output is a written spike brief: what question the package must answer, what the fallback is, and the exit criteria. That is a PM artifact, and it is the right next step.

What this release does not support: any claim about new capabilities, performance improvements, or stability gains. Do not let a version bump imply progress in roadmap or stakeholder materials.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The need is developer-facing or internal — observability, debugging, request/query inspection, or similar tooling — and a failed integration costs engineering hours, not customer trust.
  • You have Laravel-native engineering capacity to read the source, pin an exact version, and patch or fork if needed. At 0.0.x, source readability is the real support contract.
  • You can wrap it behind an internal interface so replacement or removal is a contained change.
  • The alternative is building it yourself and the build cost is meaningfully higher than a 1–2 day evaluation spike.
  • The maintainer is responsive and the repository shows an active test suite and a stated Laravel version support matrix.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The surface is customer-facing or revenue-critical, or falls under compliance, audit, or SLA obligations that require dependency stability guarantees.
  • No one on the team can own the source. A pre-1.0 dependency with terse release notes and no internal owner is a liability, not a shortcut.
  • Native Laravel tooling already covers the need — Telescope, Horizon, Pulse, or Clockwork. Duplicating an existing first-party capability is negative ROI regardless of package quality.
  • You need predictable upgrade paths. Two undocumented releases in a 0.0.x line means every bump is potentially a breaking change with no migration note.
  • Supply-chain review is a blocker and the package cannot clear it — in which case stop before the spike, not after.

Immediate gate before any adoption: review the actual diff between v0.0.3 and v0.0.5 and the repository's README/version matrix. The missing changelog may reflect a young project rather than poor practice — but the PM decision should be made on the diff, not on the version number.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30 seconds): We are tracking a small open-source Laravel package at v0.0.5 as a possible replacement for internal developer tooling. It is pre-1.0 with no published changelog detail, so I am not recommending adoption or roadmap commitment. I am recommending a one-to-two day evaluation with a defined exit criteria, at effectively zero cost, and no customer exposure. Decision requested: approve the evaluation window, not the dependency.

For engineering leadership: The package is at 0.0.x and shipped v0.0.5 with only a diff link. That means no upgrade contract. Ask: does it duplicate Telescope/Pulse/Clockwork? Who owns the fork if the maintainer stops? Can it sit behind an interface so removal is cheap? If the answers are "no duplicate," "we can own it," and "yes," it is worth a spike. If any answer is "no," it is a distraction.

Anticipated objections:

  • "It's only v0.0.5 — too early." Correct, which is why the ask is an evaluation, not adoption. The cost of saying no later is one deleted branch.
  • "Why not just build it?" Quantify that first. If the internal build is under a week, build it and skip the dependency risk entirely.
  • "The changelog is empty — isn't that a red flag?" It is a yellow flag about release discipline, not necessarily code quality. The diff resolves it; the version number cannot.

What to ask for: a two-day timebox, one named engineer, a written go/no-go against explicit criteria (does it solve the problem, is it readable, can we contain it), and a hard rule to pin an exact version if we proceed.
