Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for internal messaging. If a roadmap item reads "let admins/support staff message users from the admin panel," this package replaces a 2–4 engineer-week build of message threads, unread badges, attachments, and broadcast wiring with a Composer install. That reframes the decision from "build a messaging subsystem" to "configure a plugin and validate it."
  • Feature sequencing on an existing Filament back office. Teams already on Filament can ship a support-inbox or vendor-communication feature inside the tools admins already use, avoiding a context switch to a separate Slack/Intercom-style product for low-volume, internal-facing conversations.
  • MVP scoping. Useful as a throwaway-speed enabler: get messaging in front of users in a discovery sprint, measure whether conversations actually happen, and only then invest in a proprietary build or a paid SaaS (Stream, Sendbird, Ably-based chat) once volume and requirements are known.
  • Roadmap de-risking on real-time infrastructure. Because Chatify is the transport-adjacent layer, adopting it is also a decision about Pusher/Ably/Laravel Reverb. That choice should be made once, deliberately, since it outlives this plugin.
  • Maintenance budgeting. MIT license plus a single maintainer and 0 dependents means the honest product decision is not "adopt" but "adopt and vendor." Budget for forking and pinning, and treat the package as a starting point you own rather than a dependency you consume.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt (or spike) when most of these hold:

  • You are already running Filament v3-style panels and Laravel 10/11, and the messaging surface is inside the admin panel, not the customer-facing app.
  • Your audience is internal or low-concurrency — support agents, ops staff, a few hundred conversations per day, not thousands of concurrent sockets.
  • You already have, or are willing to standardize on, a broadcast driver (Pusher/Ably/Reverb) and can accept its per-connection cost.
  • Requirements are plain: 1:1 threads, text, attachments, unread counts, notification favicon. No moderation queue, no multi-tenant isolation, no delivery receipts at scale.
  • You have engineering capacity to fork and pin: check Filament major-version compatibility, audit the Chatify upstream for staleness, and own security patches.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The chat is customer-facing and business-critical — you need SLAs, uptime guarantees, moderation, spam controls, mobile push, or read receipts at scale.
  • You need multi-tenancy, data residency, or regulated compliance (HIPAA/GDPR processor agreements) — a 26-star, single-maintainer package cannot carry that.
  • You are on, or about to move to, a Filament major version the plugin doesn't support. Verify before committing; Filament's release cadence breaks plugins routinely.
  • Anyone on the team would be blocked waiting on upstream fixes. With 0 dependents and a March 2025 last release, the ecosystem signal is thin and you should assume you are the maintainer.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: "We can put real-time messaging into our admin panel for roughly the cost of a configuration spike instead of a multi-week build. It's MIT-licensed, so there's no vendor lock-in and no per-seat fee on top of our existing broadcast provider. The trade-off is that it's a small open-source project — so I'm recommending a two-day spike and, if it passes, a decision to fork and own it. That's cheaper than building, and reversible."

To engineering: "Thin adapter between Filament and Chatify. No new architectural concepts — it rides on our existing queue, database, and broadcast stack. Two caveats we should price in: we pin the version and vendor the code so a Filament upgrade can't strand us, and we own the fork. Call it low lock-in, low support."

Positioning line: tactical accelerator, not a strategic platform bet — buy the head start, own the code, revisit when usage data justifies a real build.
