Filament Rating Laravel Package

mokhosh/filament-rating

mokhosh/filament-rating adds customizable star ratings to Filament forms, tables, and infolists. It provides an interactive rating input, display column, and read-only views for Laravel Filament panels, with configurable icons, colors, and half-star support.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • mokhosh/filament-rating is a leaf-level UI plugin: it adds a star-rating form field / table column to Filament panels. It has no persistence layer, no queue workers, no service providers that mutate global state beyond Filament's asset/plugin registration. Blast radius is confined to admin-panel rendering.
  • v2.0.0 is the Filament 4 / Tailwind CSS 4 compatibility release. That aligns the package with Filament's own v4 theming model (CSS-first Tailwind config, plugin-provided CSS via ->css()/theme registration rather than a published tailwind.config.js). This matters because Tailwind 4 removed the JS config as the default source of truth; any plugin shipping precompiled or config-based styles had to be reworked.
  • The 2.0.0 major bump is the signal that Filament 3 support is dropped or at least no longer the supported target. Treat v1.x and v2.x as parallel lines, not an upgrade-in-place.

Integration feasibility

  • Feasible for any project already on Filament 4. For Filament 3 projects, v2.0.0 is not adoptable — stay pinned to ^1.4.
  • Runtime dependency bumps in this release are Dependabot-only and touch CI (actions/checkout, dependabot/fetch-metadata, laravel-pint-action). No transitive runtime risk is introduced by those commits.
  • The single substantive change is one external PR from a first-time contributor. That is the whole engineering surface of this release.

Technical risk

  • Unverified upgrade claim. Release notes assert Filament 4 + Tailwind 4 support but give no test matrix, no screenshots, no changelog of removed APIs. Before adoption, confirm: does the field render in a custom (non-default) Filament theme after npm run build? Does it work in a panel using Filament's default compiled CSS?
  • Semver ambiguity. Confirm what 2.0.0 actually breaks: minimum Filament constraint, minimum PHP/Laravel, and whether v1.4.1 will still receive fixes. If v1 is effectively frozen, Filament 3 teams are on an unsupported branch.
  • Bus factor. Single-maintainer package with one external contributor on the flagship change. Low absolute risk given the small surface, but no continuity plan.
  • Ecosystem timing. Filament 4 / Tailwind 4 are recent; third-party plugin compatibility across the ecosystem is uneven. Pin exact versions and test in a staging panel.

Key questions

  1. Does v2.0.0 hard-require filament/filament ^4.0, and does it still resolve on 3.x?
  2. Is v1.4.1 maintained (security/compat patches) or end-of-life?
  3. Are there automated tests, or is this release validated manually?
  4. Does the plugin require a theme rebuild step in the host app, and is that documented?
  5. Any migration steps for existing rating columns/fields (API renames, config keys)?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Fits cleanly into a Laravel + Filament 4 admin panel. No backend services, no migrations, no storage assumptions. The rating value is a normal Eloquent attribute on the host model — the package is presentation-only.
  • Tailwind 4 alignment means it should work with Filament's CSS-first theming without a bespoke tailwind.config.js shim, which reduces per-project glue code.

Migration path

  • Filament 3 → stay on ^1.4. Do not attempt v2.
  • Filament 3 → 4: upgrade Filament first, complete the Tailwind 4 theme migration, then add ^2.0. Reverse order will produce confusing CSS failures.
  • Existing v1 installs moving to v2: diff the README and any published views/config between tags; assume at minimum a constraint change and possibly a CSS registration change. Re-publish assets after upgrade (vendor:publish --force on the tagged assets) and rebuild the theme.

Compatibility

  • Verify PHP and Laravel constraints from composer.json at the v2.0.0 tag rather than inferring from release notes.
  • Check for conflicts with other Filament form-builder plugins that also ship custom Tailwind 4 CSS — duplicate layer/@source registrations are a plausible failure mode.
  • Confirm behavior under Filament's dark mode and in table-column (inline, non-form) context.

Sequencing

  1. Confirm Filament 4 and Tailwind 4 are live in the target panel.
  2. Spike in a throwaway branch: install ^2.0, render the field and column in default and custom themes.
  3. If clean, adopt for new panels immediately; for existing panels, adopt behind a normal release cycle with visual QA.
  4. If blocked on Filament 3, pin ^1.4 in composer.json and open a tracking issue for the Filament 4 upgrade with this package called out as a dependency gate.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Low steady-state cost: no config, no background processes, no data. The ongoing work is upgrade coupling — this package must be re-released for each Filament major, and the Filament 4 migration took roughly a year from v1.4.1 to v2.0.0. Budget for that lag at each Filament major.
  • Pin the constraint (^2.0) and let Renovate/Dependabot surface minor bumps; do not float to *.

Support

  • Upstream support is GitHub issues on a single-maintainer repo. Expect best-effort response. Keep an internal fallback: the component is small enough to fork or replace with a custom Filament field if the package stalls — estimate hours, not weeks.

Scaling

  • Negligible. Rendering cost is per-row/per-field UI only. For very large tables with an inline rating column, watch the eager-loading of any aggregate rating attribute — that is a host-app query concern, not a package one.

Failure modes

  • CSS not compiled: rating renders unstyled or invisible in production if the theme isn't rebuilt or the plugin's CSS isn't registered. Highest-probability failure; catch it in a pre-prod panel, not unit tests.
  • Silent breakage on a Filament minor: plugin depends on Filament internals for field/column rendering; pin Filament minors alongside it in staging.
  • Abandonment: if the maintainer stops, the package rots against future Filament majors. Mitigation is a fork or an in-house field; low effort given the scope.
  • Version skew across panels: mixed v1/v2 in a monorepo leads to confusing render differences. Standardize per panel and document the mapping.

Ramp-up

  • Minimal. Any developer who has built a Filament resource can use this from the README. Half a day for a first integration including theme verification; near zero for teams already fluent in Filament 4 and Tailwind 4 theming. The only non-obvious skill is Tailwind 4 CSS registration in Filament panels, which is a Filament-upgrade skill, not a package-specific one.
