Moesif Laravel Laravel Package

moesif/moesif-laravel

Laravel middleware that captures API calls and sends request/response data to Moesif for analytics, monitoring, and monetization. A quick drop-in way to log API traffic, track usage, and debug issues in Laravel apps.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for API analytics. This package lets us instrument a Laravel API with Moesif's analytics/monetization platform in hours instead of building request logging, per-customer aggregation, retention, and dashboards ourselves—turning an open-ended "build an internal analytics pipeline" epic into a procurement and integration task.
  • API monetization and packaging. If we're moving an API product to usage-based or tiered pricing, per-account request volume, endpoint usage, and quota consumption are prerequisites. The middleware feeds those numbers; it doesn't set pricing, but it unblocks the pricing conversation with data.
  • Roadmap prioritization for API surface. Endpoint-level usage and error-rate views let us decide what to deprecate, what to optimize, and where to invest—evidence for the next quarter's API roadmap rather than internal guessing.
  • Customer-facing usage and transparency. Supports decisions on whether to ship a self-serve usage dashboard or usage alerts, and whether that's a product differentiator or a support-cost reduction.
  • Support and incident triage. Request-level capture (with redaction) shortens the "why did this customer's integration break" loop and reduces escalation time.
  • Churn and expansion signals. Account-level activity trends inform CS prioritization and identify accounts approaching quota limits—an expansion trigger for sales.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • We're building or already run a Laravel API product and need per-customer usage analytics without standing up our own pipeline.
  • There's a real monetization or quota requirement on the near roadmap—usage-based billing, rate-tier enforcement, overage reporting.
  • The team is small and time-constrained; a middleware drop-in beats a 1–2 engineer-quarter internal build.
  • We're already a Moesif customer or have selected it in a vendor evaluation—this is a thin, official adapter, not a standalone product.
  • We accept sending request metadata to a third-party SaaS and can scope what's captured.

Look elsewhere when:

  • License is a blocker. The repository reports NOASSERTION, meaning the license could not be identified automatically. Before any production use, legal must confirm the actual terms. An unclear license on an SDK embedded in our application is a genuine adoption risk, not a formality.
  • Data sensitivity is high. Payloads containing PII, PHI, or regulated data make third-party request capture a compliance project rather than an integration task.
  • We need self-hosted or open-source-only analytics. This is a client for a commercial SaaS; there's no meaningful offline mode.
  • Community validation matters to us. 10 stars and a low composite score signal limited external adoption and peer review. That's expected for a vendor-official SDK (the vendor, not the community, is the maintainer), but it means we should not treat community traction as a quality proxy—evaluate the vendor's SLA and support instead.
  • Traffic volume is large enough that per-event ingestion and retention costs need modeling first.
  • We need deep customization of the analytics model; a thin middleware wrapper won't give us that.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a low-effort, buy-not-build path to the usage data our API business needs. It replaces a multi-month internal analytics build with a vendor integration, and it's the enabling dependency for usage-based pricing, quota management, and account-level retention insight. Two caveats to price in: the license needs legal confirmation before production, and we're committing to a SaaS vendor with associated data-handling obligations. Recommend a scoped pilot on one API surface with a defined success metric (e.g., time-to-first-usage-dashboard, reduction in usage-related support tickets) before broader rollout.

To engineering: It's an official Moesif middleware wrapping their PHP SDK—install, configure, register the middleware, and requests flow to Moesif. Minimal code surface, no schema changes. The real work is deciding what to capture and redacting anything sensitive before it leaves our boundary, plus confirming the license and pinning a version. It's a dependency, not a fork—assume no meaningful upstream contribution from us. Budget a short spike to validate overhead, payload size, and behavior under our queue/error paths, and treat the low community footprint as a reason to lean on vendor support rather than community answers.
