Table Widget Laravel Package

mlsolutions/table-widget

A Laravel package that adds a reusable table widget for rendering tabular data with configurable columns, sorting, and actions. Drop it into dashboards or views to display query results quickly without rebuilding table markup each time.

Getting Started

Treat mlsolutions/table-widget as a thin, read-only Nova dashboard table: useful for “recent failed jobs”, “orders needing review”, “latest signups”, or similar operational lists. Because adoption is effectively zero, start by pinning the package and validating it against your Nova/dashboard versions.

Minimal path:

  1. Check the package’s composer.json for Laravel, Nova, and laravel/nova-dashboard version constraints. Install on a branch:
    composer require mlsolutions/table-widget:^...

  2. Publish only what the service provider exposes:
    php artisan vendor:publish --provider="MlSolutions\TableWidget\TableWidgetServiceProvider"
    php artisan nova:publish

  3. Look first at README.md, src/, resources/js, and the service provider. Identify the base widget class, how it receives a query/data source, how columns are declared, and whether it expects a Nova resource, Eloquent builder, or array.
  4. Build one small widget before making it generic. A good first use case is a “Recent failed jobs” table scoped to the last 10 records, with columns for ID, queue, failed time, and a row link to the Nova resource detail page.

Register that widget on the dashboard only after you can render it locally and confirm the card endpoint returns data.

Implementation Patterns

  • One widget per question. Prefer small widgets such as “failed jobs”, “pending approvals”, and “recent orders” over a single configurable mega-table. It keeps queries, authorization, and caching understandable.
  • Use a subclass as the integration point. Create an application widget class extending the package base class and override the query/columns/options methods rather than scattering configuration in the dashboard file. That gives you a testable place for scopes and formatting.
  • Start from Eloquent or Nova resource queries. Use Model::query()->with(...)->latest()->limit(...) rather than raw arrays. If the package can consume a Nova resource, reuse its index query and field metadata; otherwise map the few fields you need manually.
  • Keep formatting in PHP where practical. Labels, date formatting, status badges, and row URLs are easier to test in PHP than in a custom Vue component. Only extend the frontend component when the package’s built-in column rendering cannot express the UI.
  • Scope every dashboard query. Dashboard cards often run outside normal resource index authorization. Apply user/team/tenant constraints in the query and explicitly check policies or gates before showing sensitive rows.
  • Link rows to Nova resources. Use the Nova resource URI pattern, or the package’s row URL option if provided, so users can click through from the dashboard table to the full resource index/detail page.
  • Limit and paginate deliberately. A dashboard table is not a report grid. Show 5–25 rows, add pagination if supported, and link to the Nova index for full filtering. Avoid unbounded queries and per-row aggregate queries.
  • Cache expensive data. For counts or joins that are costly, cache with a key containing user/team/filter values and a short TTL. Invalidate on model events where practical.
  • Test the contract. Add a feature test that instantiates the widget, asserts the query respects scopes, and checks that unauthorized users cannot see restricted rows. If rendering is hard to test, at least test the data-building method directly.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Low adoption is the main risk. With zero stars and no dependents, expect sparse documentation and few community answers. Read the source, pin an exact version, and keep an upgrade branch. The recent June 2025 release helps, but it does not replace compatibility testing.
  • Version compatibility matters. Nova major versions and dashboard package versions change asset pipelines and card APIs. Confirm the package’s constraints before installing, especially if you are on Nova 5 or a newer dashboard package.
  • Assets are a common failure point. If the table renders blank, check that nova:publish ran, the Vue component is registered, and the browser console/network response for the Nova card endpoint is clean. Clear caches with php artisan optimize:clear after publishing.
  • Authorization is not automatic. Do not assume Nova resource policies protect a dashboard table. Enforce visibility in the widget query and, where necessary, hide columns or entire widgets for unauthorized users.
  • Avoid closures in cached config. If the package supports config callbacks, remember that php artisan config:cache cannot serialize closures. Prefer class strings or widget methods for dynamic behavior.
  • Watch N+1 and row-level queries. A simple table can become slow if each row triggers a relationship or count. Eager-load relationships and precompute aggregates in the base query.
  • Debug from the data layer first. Log the generated SQL, inspect the card response, then inspect the frontend component. A blank table is often an empty query or a JSON shape mismatch, not a CSS issue.
  • Extension points are likely simple. Override query, columns, options, and row URL methods in your own widget class before publishing or forking views/JS. If you need deeper customization, prefer a small custom Nova card over patching vendor files.
