Lightsaml Laravel Package

mlightsaml/lightsaml

LightSAML is a PHP SAML 2.0 library with message models, bindings, metadata, and XML signing/encryption support. It helps build service provider and identity provider integrations, including in Laravel apps.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit. LightSAML is a framework-agnostic SAML 2.0 library providing message binding, XML canonicalization, signing/encryption and a basic SP/IdP metadata model — not a Laravel package. There is no service provider, config publisher, facade, or HTTP middleware. In a Laravel stack it would sit as a low-level protocol engine inside a custom SamlService, invoked from a controller (ACS endpoint) or middleware, with all configuration, session handling, and user provisioning written in-house. That is workable but places SAML correctness directly in application code, which is the opposite of where most teams want it.

Integration feasibility. Technically installable via Composer and usable on PHP 7.x/8.x assuming the fork has patched upstream's legacy constraints (xmlseclibs, robrichards/xmlseclibs, symfony/* ranges). The absence of any Laravel-specific wiring is a modest engineering cost (2–4 days for a first working SP flow), but the bigger feasibility question is whether this fork is a legitimate, maintained continuation or a private patch dump. Zero stars and zero dependents is a strong signal of the latter.

Technical risk. SAML is a security protocol where subtle defects become authentication bypasses: XML Signature Wrapping, comment-truncation canonicalization, XXE, and relaxed audience/recipient/InResponseTo checks. Upstream LightSAML was effectively abandoned years ago, and this fork carries that lineage without visible community review, security policy, CVE history, or test coverage signals. Relying on an unattributed single-maintainer fork for an identity boundary is a material risk that will require independent security review before production — cost that likely exceeds the savings versus a maintained alternative.

Key questions. Is this fork patched for known LightSAML/xmlseclibs advisories and PHP 8.2+? Who maintains it and what is the commit cadence? Does it support the specific IdP (Azure AD, Okta, ADFS, Shibboleth) including signed-assertion-only and encrypted-assertion modes? Is IdP-initiated or SP-initiated flow required? What is the exit plan if the fork is abandoned?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. Poor out of the box. The realistic architecture is a thin Laravel adapter: a config/saml.php, a singleton binding for the LightSAML AuthnRequest/Response builders, an ACS controller, and a guard or event that maps assertions to users. Everything else — metadata exchange, certificate rotation, logout — is bespoke. Budget for that adapter as a first-class deliverable, not glue code.

Migration path. If the application already uses onelogin/php-saml or aacotroneo/laravel-saml2, do not migrate to this package; those offer maintained, Laravel-wired paths with a larger user base. If LightSAML is mandated by an existing integration, isolate it behind an internal interface (SamlAuthenticator) from day one so the implementation can be swapped to OneLogin, litesaml/lightsaml, or SimpleSAMLphp without touching domain code.

Compatibility. Verify PHP constraint against the Laravel version in use (Laravel 10/11 typically implies PHP 8.1+), and confirm ext-dom, ext-openssl, and ext-libxml availability in the runtime image. Check whether the fork's composer.json allows the xmlseclibs version that carries current security fixes — a pinned, outdated transitive dependency is the most common failure here.

Sequencing. (1) Security and maintenance due diligence on the fork; (2) proof-of-concept SP flow against the actual IdP in a staging tenant, including a signed-metadata round trip; (3) interface abstraction and adapter; (4) negative-path tests (expired assertion, wrong audience, bad signature, replay); (5) production cutover with a fallback auth path. Do not start at step 3 before step 1 clears.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. This is the dominant cost. With no upstream release cadence, the team owns the library: tracking SAML/xmlseclibs advisories, patching PHP compatibility, and re-validating signatures after dependency bumps. Treat it as vendored code, not a dependency — consider forking into the org and assigning an owner with a scheduled quarterly review.

Support. No commercial backing, no visible issue activity, no documented support channel. Incidents involving signature validation will be debugged from source. Ensure at least one engineer can read the XML-DSig path, or retain an external reviewer.

Scaling. SAML is per-login and low volume; the library itself is not a throughput bottleneck. The genuine scaling concerns are certificate and metadata lifecycle management (rotation without downtime), clock skew across nodes, and stateless ACS handling behind a load balancer — session or cache state for InResponseTo correlation must be shared (Redis), not local.

Failure modes. Silent misconfiguration is the dangerous class: audience mismatch tolerated, unsigned assertions accepted because the IdP signs only the response, expired certificates ignored, or metadata cached past rotation. These do not fail loudly — they fail open. Others (XML parse errors, unsupported binding) fail closed and are visible. Add explicit assertion validation tests and alert on ACS error rate.

Ramp-up. A Laravel developer unfamiliar with SAML needs roughly one to two weeks to be productive, plus a security reviewer for the initial integration. That ramp-up, combined with the due-diligence cost, is the strongest argument for choosing a maintained, Laravel-adjacent SAML package unless this fork is already load-bearing in the estate.
