Laravel Security Laravel Package

mitnick/laravel-security

A Laravel security package that provides middleware and configuration to harden your application with security headers, CSP, HSTS, and other common protections. It helps enforce safer defaults across routes and responses with lightweight integration for Laravel projects.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Security baseline as a product requirement. A header-setting middleware covers a narrow but high-leverage slice of your security posture: clickjacking protection (X-Frame-Options / frame-ancestors), MIME-sniffing defense (X-Content-Type-Options), transport enforcement (Strict-Transport-Security), referrer leakage (Referrer-Policy), and XSS surface reduction via CSP. These are the same controls the OWASP Secure Headers Project tracks, so it gives you a defensible checklist rather than an ad-hoc one.
  • Compliance and audit evidence. Cheap, demonstrable artifacts for SOC 2 (CC6.x logical access/security ops), PCI DSS, and ISO 27001 conversations, and a common remediation line item in penetration test reports. Frequently the lowest-effort way to close "missing security headers" findings.
  • Build vs. buy vs. copy. This is a ~200-line middleware, not a platform. The real decision is "do we specify our header policy centrally and enforce it everywhere?" — the package is one implementation of that spec. Adoption cost is low; replacement cost is also low, which argues for treating it as a reference design rather than a dependency.
  • Roadmap: shared Laravel starter kit / base template. The durable product win is standardizing headers in your scaffolding so every new service ships hardened by default. That's a template-and-platform decision, not a per-app one.
  • Risk and supply-chain decisions. Zero stars, zero dependents, single maintainer, no visible release cadence. This is a deciding factor, not a footnote: adopting it introduces a dependency with no community backstop. If you use it, vendor or fork it and pin the version.
  • Explicit non-goals it does not support: authentication, authorization, rate limiting, input validation, secrets management, dependency vulnerability scanning, or WAF behavior. Do not let "it secures your Laravel app" framing substitute for those roadmap items — headers are defense-in-depth, not a security program.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You need a fast, low-risk baseline on an internal tool, admin panel, or low-traffic Laravel app where headers are currently absent entirely.
  • Your team lacks CSP expertise (nonce/hash generation, per-request policy assembly, report-only rollout) and you want a worked example to crib from before writing your own.
  • You are willing to vendor the middleware into your codebase and own it — version-pinned, code-reviewed, no runtime dependency on an unmaintained repo.
  • You need a specification artifact: reading its defaults is a fast way to draft your own header policy matrix per app tier (public marketing site vs. authenticated dashboard vs. API).
  • You're on an older Laravel/PHP combination and want something small enough to patch yourself in an afternoon.

Look elsewhere — or build in-house — when:

  • The app is customer-facing, payments-adjacent, or regulated; you need a maintained dependency with responsive security disclosure handling.
  • You require Laravel/PHP version compatibility guarantees and a release history you can track. Zero dependents means compatibility with current framework versions is unverified.
  • You need CSP violation reporting at scale, per-route policy tuning, or integration with an existing reporting endpoint — that's a spatie/laravel-csp-class problem, or custom middleware.
  • Your headers are better enforced at the edge (CDN, reverse proxy, ingress, or cloud WAF), in which case app-level middleware is duplicated effort and a source of drift.
  • You need actual security capability — rate limiting, bot mitigation, auth hardening — which Laravel ships natively and this package does not address.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: "We have a known, cheap, visible gap: our apps don't send the HTTP security headers that browsers use to block clickjacking, protocol downgrade, and content injection. Closing it costs roughly a day of engineering per app, reduces a recurring class of penetration-test findings, and produces concrete evidence for the security questionnaires our enterprise buyers and auditors send us. I'm recommending we standardize a header policy and ship it in our Laravel template, not that we take on a new vendor or a strategic dependency."

To engineering: "This package is a reference implementation, not a dependency. It's a thin middleware that stamps security headers onto responses; the useful part is its defaults and its CSP handling. The repo has no stars, no dependents, and no visible maintenance — so we read it, extract the policy, and own a small middleware (or edge config) ourselves, with tests asserting each header and a report-only CSP rollout before enforcement. Success criteria: headers present and verified on every response across all environments, no breakage from CSP on inline assets, and headers enforced at the edge where we already terminate TLS so there's one source of truth."

Framing to avoid: don't let this be sold as "we've addressed security." Position it as one control in a defense-in-depth story alongside dependency scanning, auth hardening, and rate limiting — otherwise it absorbs credit for work it doesn't do and distracts from the roadmap items that actually move risk.
