Frequently asked questions about Linkify Bundle
Can I install misd/linkify-bundle in a Laravel application?
Not in any supported way. It is a Symfony bundle built around Bundle subclasses, DependencyInjection extension config trees, YAML/XML service definitions, and a Twig extension, while Laravel has its own kernel, container, and Blade templating. Composer may either fail resolution or pull EOL Symfony FrameworkBundle scaffolding into your app, so treat this as not Laravel-compatible.
Is misd/linkify-bundle compatible with Laravel 10 or 11?
No. The newest release, v1.0.5, only adds Symfony 3.0 compatibility and the constraints are pinned to the Symfony 2.x/3.0 era; Symfony 3.0 itself reached end of life in January 2019. There is no Laravel service provider, facade, Blade directive, or config publishing, and no PHP 8 compatibility statement.
How do I use the linkify Twig filter in Laravel Blade?
You cannot use it directly. The filter is registered through a Symfony Twig extension, and Laravel Blade is not Twig, so there is no drop-in equivalent. If you need the same behavior in Blade, reimplement the transformation as a helper or Blade directive and escape the output.
Is misd/linkify-bundle still maintained?
Effectively no. The latest artefact is a single-line Symfony 3.0 compatibility patch on a 2016-era branch, with 4 stars and 0 dependents, so there is little sign of active maintenance or community battle-testing. It also makes no PHP 8 compatibility claim, which matters for modern Laravel stacks.
What is the safest way to linkify URLs in Laravel without this bundle?
Use the framework-agnostic misd/linkify library directly, or vendor a small 30–50 line helper into app/Support, then run the result through a sanitizer and an allowed-scheme check. For Markdown content, prefer the league/commonmark autolink extension instead of regex post-processing. Keep the transformation out of untrusted HTML and avoid double-escaping.
Can linkifying user-generated content with regex cause XSS or ReDoS?
Yes. Regex linkification on untrusted input is a classic injection footgun: javascript: schemes, attribute-breaking quotes, linkifying inside existing anchor or code tags, and double-escaping can all produce unsafe or corrupted output. Naive URL regexes can also suffer catastrophic backtracking on adversarial long strings, so use a sanitizer, scheme allowlist, and input length limits.
What are good alternatives to misd/linkify-bundle for Laravel?
Use misd/linkify as a plain Composer dependency and call Linkify::linkify($text) from a helper or service, or write a small custom linkifier in app/Support. For Markdown, league/commonmark's autolink extension is a better fit, and s9e/TextFormatter is an option when you need richer BBCode/Markdown handling. Avoid pulling Symfony bundles into Laravel.
Does misd/linkify-bundle support Symfony 4, 5, or 6?
No. The v1.0.5 release only adds Symfony 3.0 compatibility, and the dependency constraints sit in the ^2.x|^3.0 range, so Symfony 4 and later are not supported. Since Symfony 3.0 has been EOL since January 2019, the package is not suitable for modern Symfony either.
Can I extract the misd/linkify core class into my Laravel app?
Yes. The bundle is a thin wrapper around the framework-agnostic misd/linkify library, essentially a regex-driven Linkify::linkify($text) call plus config for HTML attributes. Vendoring the single class or reimplementing it in about 30–50 lines under app/Support is a half-day task and avoids the Symfony dependency tree. Add your own target, rel, and nofollow options and sanitize the output.
How should I test URL and email linkification edge cases?
Use a data provider covering trailing punctuation, balanced parentheses in URLs, IDN and multibyte input, mailto handling, existing anchor/code tags, javascript: schemes, and very long adversarial strings for ReDoS. Assert both the generated markup and the escaping behavior, and include negative cases where linkification must not occur. Fuzzing or property-based tests help catch regex backtracking and boundary bugs.
