Vendra Testing Laravel Package

misaf/vendra-testing

Testing toolkit for Vendra-powered Laravel applications. It supplies helper traits, model factories, and custom assertions for feature and unit tests, so you can cover marketplace and e-commerce flows with less boilerplate and more readable suites.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Delivery velocity on money-touching flows. The package exists to remove boilerplate from cart-total, order-state, and product-availability tests. Those are exactly the areas where a regression is a revenue or trust incident, so the PM-level value is shorter feedback loops on the features most likely to hurt us.
  • Feature roadmap sequencing for the storefront/checkout epic. If checkout work is on the roadmap, test scaffolding is the enabling dependency — not a nice-to-have. Deciding to adopt a testing toolkit early is a schedule decision, not a technical one.
  • Build vs. buy (vs. borrow) on test infrastructure. The alternative is writing our own base test case, factories, and price/order assertions. Given the helper surface described (testTenantModel, createTestUser, TranslationParity, TableSorting, Filament admin setup), duplicating this is real engineering days we would otherwise spend on features.
  • An ecosystem bet, priced honestly. This is a subtree split of misaf/vendra — read-only, single-maintainer, 1 star. The real decision is whether Vendra is our commerce foundation; this package is a consequence of that call, not an independent choice. A PM should approve this as team tooling, not as a platform commitment.
  • Use cases to scope against: storefront regression suites, checkout state-machine tests, multi-tenant/vendor isolation checks, and admin-panel smoke coverage — i.e., it supports confidence in releases, which is a release-cadence lever.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • We are already committed to Vendra as the commerce package and the test suite will exercise its domain.
  • It resolves cleanly as a require-dev dependency against our current PHP/Laravel/PHPUnit-or-Pest versions. Dev-only means a bad version breaks CI, never production — this is a low-approval-threshold decision.
  • We can accept that bumping it is a code-review event, not an automated update. The absence of release notes across three published versions means every bump requires reading the diff ourselves.

Look elsewhere when:

  • We are not on Vendra. Nothing here transfers; it is namespace- and contract-bound to that package graph.
  • We want a general-purpose Laravel testing utility. This is module-agnostic but Vendra-shaped — it assumes tenancy, Pennant features, and Filament admin context.
  • We need vendor support, SLAs, or a published changelog. None of that exists here, and the read-only split means issues and PRs must go upstream to misaf/vendra.
  • Bus factor is a hard constraint. One maintainer, low adoption signal, and an abandoned-package failure mode that eventually blocks a PHP major upgrade. Mitigation is genuinely cheap (a dev-only swap affects only tests), but it must be a conscious accepted risk.

One caveat worth flagging: the published README materially under-sells the actual API surface visible in the package's own development skill docs. Budget onboarding time accordingly — the capability is there, the documentation isn't.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a free, MIT-licensed, test-only library that shortens how long it takes to verify checkout and order logic before release. It carries zero production risk — it is never installed in the running application — and it avoids us building and maintaining equivalent test scaffolding ourselves. The trade-off is governance, not technology: it is maintained by a single author with minimal public adoption, so we treat version bumps as reviewed changes and keep a pin-or-fork exit that costs us only test code.

To engineering: Standard Composer dev dependency, one-line change, no infrastructure, no migrations, no service provider collisions expected — verify that last point at review. Extend the provided base test case for a Vendra-ready app, use the helpers for products/carts/orders and the fluent price/total/order-state assertions, and keep it strictly in require-dev. The real work is diligence, not integration: confirm the composer.json constraint diff (PHP floor, illuminate/* range, PHPUnit/Pest major) and run the full suite plus a coverage delta against baseline, because the highest-severity failure mode here is silent assertion relaxation — tests that pass when they should fail. Sequence it before framework upgrades, not after. Roughly half a day of reviewer time.
