Form Bundle Laravel Package

mindy/form-bundle

Mindy Form Bundle is a PHP package that packages form-building utilities and helpers, making it easier to define, render, and manage forms with less boilerplate. It aims to streamline common form workflows and provide a simple integration point for PHP applications.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for the form layer. This package is the "buy/borrow" option for form definition, validation binding, and rendering — and at 1 star, 0 dependents, and a 0.005 score, the comparison is not close. The realistic decision it informs is build internally on Laravel-native validation, Form Requests, Blade/Livewire, or Filament, not adopt this artifact.
  • Framework-alignment triage. The name says it plainly: FormBundle is a Symfony/MindyPHP bundle, not a Laravel package. Adopting it means importing a foreign framework's bundle registration, container, and Twig conventions into a Laravel app — a maintenance tax with no offsetting feature gain, since Laravel already covers the same ground natively.
  • Roadmap scoping for form-heavy work. If the backlog includes admin CRUD screens, multi-step wizards, dynamic/survey-style form builders, or configurable intake forms, this repo is a cheap reference for what a form-definition abstraction looks like — useful input for writing acceptance criteria even though we won't consume the code.
  • Vendor/ecosystem risk triage. Zero dependents and no visible release cadence is a "reject and document" signal, not a "pilot" one. Cheap to decide now; expensive to unwind after it sits on the user-input boundary of a production app.
  • Opportunity signal (4.16). Something is telling us form tooling is a live problem area — that argues for investing in the problem (a thin internal form-definition layer with tests and an owner), not in this artifact.
  • Competitive landscape input. Use it to sanity-check our own form tooling against Filament, Livewire forms, Inertia + Form Requests, and — if we ever want framework-agnostic — Symfony Form used directly. It strengthens the case that mainstream options already cover these use cases at lower risk.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • The application is already built on MindyPHP (or we are deliberately standardizing on that framework), so bundle conventions are native rather than foreign.
  • We need a minimal, self-contained form layer and are willing to own and vendor the code, since upstream maintenance is unproven.
  • We have capacity to read and patch the source ourselves — treat it as a code sample to fork, not a dependency to rely on.
  • We have confirmed the bundle runs outside Mindy with no mindy/* runtime dependencies, and its Symfony/PHP constraints intersect with our pinned versions.
  • MIT licensing is acceptable for commercial use with attribution preserved (it is).

Look elsewhere — and default to elsewhere — when:

  • The stack is Laravel, where Form Requests, validation rules, Blade components, Livewire, Inertia, and Filament already cover 80–95% of form needs with first-party support.
  • You need maintenance guarantees: security patches, PHP/Laravel version support, documented upgrade paths, or a community to escalate to. One star and zero dependents means none of that exists.
  • You need accessibility, i18n, file uploads, conditional logic, or dynamic form builders — a package this thin is unlikely to have production-grade coverage, and you'd rebuild the remainder anyway.
  • The product is regulated or long-lived, where dependency provenance and bus-factor are part of the review.
  • Adoption cost (learning an unfamiliar bundle API plus a hand-built container bridge) exceeds the cost of writing the 200–400 lines of Laravel-native form code you actually need.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed form component from an unrelated PHP framework with effectively no adoption — one GitHub star and no dependent projects. It is not a viable vendor dependency for our product. The recommendation is no adoption, no spend, no migration: we log it as a reference and keep using framework-native form handling. Cost of the decision: near zero. Cost of adopting and later unwinding it: meaningful engineering time, a support gap we'd have to absorb ourselves, and a security-relevant dependency on the user-input boundary that nobody upstream is watching. Form-related roadmap items are unaffected.

To engineering: Treat mindy/form-bundle as a reading reference, not a dependency. It's a thin registration layer over Symfony Form, so integrating it into a Laravel codebase means bridging two container and configuration models for little functional gain — Laravel's Form Requests, Validator, Blade, and Filament already exceed what it provides, and Composer constraints on symfony/* will likely conflict with Laravel's pins on upgrade day. If the team wants a reusable internal form-definition layer for dynamic forms or wizards, that's a worthwhile spike: scope it as an internal package with tests, an owner, and a written ADR, using this repo as one data point among several. If anyone ends up on MindyPHP specifically, vendor/fork the code and pin it — do not consume it as a live upstream. Either way, wrap any choice behind an internal interface so the decision stays reversible.
