Symfony Validation Enhancements Bundle Laravel Package

michaelcozzolino/symfony-validation-enhancements-bundle

A Symfony bundle that enhances the Validator component with additional validation features and constraints. Integrates quickly into existing Symfony applications to simplify common validation scenarios and keep validation logic reusable and configuration-driven.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for validation plumbing. The release consolidates a small but recurring category of custom code — cross-field/entity-existence validation and surfacing validation errors as structured responses — into a maintained package. This is a "buy" candidate anywhere the team is handwriting EntityExists-style constraints or duplicating error-listener wiring across services.
  • Domain-integrity checks at the boundary. EntityExistsValidator (now with a non-existence mode) supports decisions around referential integrity validation in forms and API payloads — e.g. verifying a referenced record exists before persisting, or asserting uniqueness/absence for registration and invite flows. This is roadmap-relevant for any feature that accepts foreign identifiers from untrusted input.
  • API error-contract standardization. The validation error listener is the lever for a consistent, machine-readable error envelope across endpoints. That feeds decisions on public API versioning, SDK/client error handling, and frontend form-validation strategy — a cross-team concern, not just a backend detail.
  • Test and quality posture. Adoption of PHPStan and Pest signals the maintainer is investing in static analysis and a modern test suite. For a dependency that sits in the request-validation path, this is a meaningful input to a "can we depend on this?" call.
  • Maturity milestone. v1.0.0 with documentation added is the point at which a package becomes defensible in an architecture review; prior 0.x status is the usual reason such dependencies get deferred.
  • Not supported: this does not inform core product differentiation. It is infrastructure hygiene — treat it as a cost/risk decision, not a feature bet.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The codebase is Symfony-based (this is a Symfony bundle; the release notes, namespaces, and DI wiring all point there). Laravel teams should look at Laravel-native equivalents — Rule::exists(), Rule::unique(), form requests, and ValidationException handling already cover most of this surface with zero added dependency.
  • You are repeatedly writing entity-existence constraints, or need the inverse (assert a record does not exist) for signup/invite/uniqueness flows — the v1.0.0 non-existence mode is the clearest differentiator.
  • You want a uniform validation error payload without building and maintaining a listener yourself.
  • You are on a supported Symfony LTS and PHP version, and the dependency chain (including michaelcozzolino/php-redefinitions) is acceptable in your supply-chain review.
  • You value a small, single-maintainer package over internal ownership — and are comfortable with the associated bus-factor.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are on Laravel — the framework's native validation rules, form requests, and exception rendering make this package's value largely redundant, and adopting a Symfony bundle is an integration cost with no payoff.
  • Your validation needs are trivial (a handful of rules) — the dependency and its transitive tree likely cost more than the code saved.
  • You require a vendor with a support contract, security disclosure process, or multiple maintainers. Single-author, pre-1.0-history projects may not clear procurement or compliance gates.
  • You need framework-agnostic validation — prefer a standalone validator library.
  • Upgrade risk matters more than the feature: the release renames validation rules, so any existing v0.2.0 usage requires a migration pass. If you are mid-release, defer.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): A small open-source PHP validation library just reached its first stable release. It replaces hand-written "does this record exist?" checks and ad-hoc error formatting with a maintained, documented, statically analyzed component, and adds the ability to assert that a record does not exist — useful for signup and invite flows. The strategic value is modest and defensive: slightly less custom code to own, a more consistent API error contract, and a lower chance of validation bugs reaching customers. Cost is near zero in license terms; the real considerations are that it is a Symfony component (so it does not apply to our Laravel services) and that it is maintained by a single author, which is a supply-chain and continuity risk worth a one-line acknowledgment rather than a blocker.

For engineering leads: The 1.0.0 milestone brings documentation, PHPStan static analysis, a Pest-based test suite, and a structured validation-error listener. The EntityExistsValidator now supports both existence and non-existence assertions. Two caveats to flag in review: (1) rule names changed in this release — any 0.2.0 consumers need a rename pass, ideally covered by tests; (2) framework fit is Symfony only, so scope adoption to Symfony services and leave Laravel services on native rules. Recommend a time-boxed spike in one service, measured against the lines of validation code it removes, before any broader standard.

Recommendation: Adopt opportunistically in Symfony services that already hand-roll entity-existence constraints or duplicate error-response shaping. Do not standardize org-wide; do not adopt in Laravel services; pin the version and re-review at the next major.
