Laravel Formatters Laravel Package

michael-rubel/laravel-formatters

Laravel Formatters provides a clean, extensible set of formatter classes for common tasks like money, phone numbers, names, dates, and more. Formatters auto-resolve through the container and support method chaining, making consistent formatting simple throughout your app.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • The package implements the Formatter pattern: a thin presentation layer that wraps a domain object (typically an Eloquent model) and exposes derived, display-oriented values without polluting the model or the API Resource. For a Laravel codebase already separating persistence, domain, and transport concerns, this maps cleanly onto the "presentation/transformation" seam.
  • Best fit is teams that currently scatter accessors, ->toArray() overrides, and Blade/JSON formatting logic across models and controllers. The pattern centralizes that logic behind a class per model (or per context), which is a real consistency win in apps with many small resources.
  • Poor fit where the codebase already standardizes on Laravel API Resources, spatie/laravel-data, or view models. Adopting a second presentation abstraction creates a "which layer formats this?" ambiguity that outweighs the convenience.
  • It is a pattern package, not an infrastructure dependency — the architectural commitment is to a convention, not to a runtime. That lowers blast radius but raises the question of whether the abstraction earns its keep versus ~50 lines of in-house base class.

Integration feasibility

  • Technically trivial: a single Composer dependency, a base class to extend, and a trait bound to models. No migrations, no config, no service provider surface worth auditing, no external services. A competent Laravel developer can spike this in half a day.
  • The realistic effort is not integration but standardization and review guidance: naming conventions, which attributes belong in the formatter versus the resource, and whether formatters are allowed to touch relations (N+1 risk).
  • Composer-level risk is minimal (MIT, no transitive weight), but the package must be locked and pinned; a solo-maintainer package of this size should not float on ^x.

Technical risk

  • Maintainer concentration. Single-author package with ~94 stars. Bus factor of one. The surface is small enough to fork or vendor if abandoned, so the risk is "inconvenience," not "outage."
  • Abstraction leakage. Formatters that reach into lazy-loaded relations or call auth()/now() become non-deterministic and untestable. This is a code-discipline risk introduced by the pattern, not by the package.
  • Pattern lock-in. If the team wires the trait into 40 models, replacing the pattern later is a mechanical but broad refactor. Mitigate by keeping formatter construction behind a small internal helper so the package is swappable.
  • Duplication with existing framework features. Laravel accessors + API Resources already cover ~80% of the use cases; the package's value is convention and discoverability, so the risk is adopting a dependency for something the framework nearly does natively.
  • Documentation and test depth. Verify the package's own test coverage and whether it handles nested/relation formatting. Dependents: 0 suggests limited field validation — treat the repo's tests as the primary evidence of behavior.

Key questions

  1. Which concrete pain are we solving — model bloat, API/UI format divergence, or duplicated Blade logic? If none is measurable, this is a solution in search of a problem.
  2. Does the existing codebase already use API Resources or laravel-data? If yes, is a second formatter layer defensible?
  3. Do we need context-dependent formatting (admin vs. public vs. mobile payloads)? The pattern shines there; a single canonical output does not justify it.
  4. Who owns the convention doc and code review checklist for formatters?
  5. Can we fork under our org if the maintainer goes quiet, and is the license/attribution path acceptable to legal?
  6. Does the package's supported Laravel/PHP matrix match our current and next upgrade target?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Requires a modern Laravel baseline (verify the exact constraint in composer.json against our version). Zero infrastructure footprint: no queue, cache, storage, or HTTP surface. It composes with Eloquent, Blade, and API Resources rather than competing with them for runtime.
  • Natural placement: app/Formatters/ (or per-domain app/Domain/{X}/Formatters/), with formatters resolved only at the edges — controllers, resources, Blade components — never inside domain services or jobs.

Migration path

  • Do not bulk-convert. Choose one read-heavy, format-heavy aggregate (e.g., a Product or Invoice with 8–12 derived display fields) and implement a formatter alongside the existing accessors behind a feature flag or simply unused-but-tested.
  • Compare outputs field-by-field against the current accessor/resource output with a characterization test. Only then delete the old code path for that model.
  • Roll forward model-by-model on a prioritized list (highest churn/most duplicated formatting first). Cap the migration at a quarter; if adoption stalls at 2–3 models, the pattern isn't landing — revert and keep the in-house base class.
  • Record an ADR: pattern, boundaries (formatters are pure, no I/O, no auth, no now() without injection), and the exit plan (internal Formatter base class mirroring the package API).

Compatibility

  • Low-friction with Eloquent and Blade; check interaction with API Resources — the pragmatic answer is usually "formatter produces the array, resource handles the envelope and conditional relations."
  • Verify behavior on PHP 8.2/8.3 and the framework version we run now and next; a Nov 2024 release likely supports current Laravel, but confirm before pinning.
  • Watch for strict_types, return-type, and readonly conventions in the package versus our static analysis (PHPStan/Larastan) level — a mismatch here creates noise across every formatter.

Sequencing

  1. Spike: install, build one formatter, write characterization tests, verify relation handling and static analysis cleanliness (1–2 days).
  2. Decision gate: does it reduce lines-of-formatting-code and review friction versus an in-house base class? Cheap to answer, cheap to abandon.
  3. Convention doc + one reviewed PR template example.
  4. Pilot on 2–3 models with tests.
  5. Broader rollout by domain, with the exit plan documented before step 5, not after.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Near-zero runtime maintenance; the cost is version-bump choreography when Laravel majors land. Budget ~1–2 hours per framework upgrade to validate constraints and run the suite.
  • Because it is convention-bearing, maintenance also means curating formatters: preventing them from accreting business logic. Add it to code review checklists; without that, the pattern degrades into "second model."

Support

  • No vendor support; community-only via GitHub issues. With a single maintainer and modest star count, expect self-service. Our mitigation is the fork clause and the internal base-class exit plan.
  • Internal support is trivial: any mid-level Laravel developer can read the package in an hour. Document the pattern, not the package.

Scaling

  • Scales fine with request volume — it is plain PHP object composition with no added I/O. The real scaling concern is N+1 queries if formatters touch lazy relations; enforce eager-loading at the query layer and forbid relation access inside formatters, or require them to accept already-loaded data.
  • Serialization of large collections through formatters adds per-item object overhead; negligible at typical API page sizes, worth measuring only for large exports/bulk payloads.
  • Team scaling: a shared, discoverable formatter layer helps onboarding and reduces format drift across squads — arguably the strongest argument for adoption.

Failure modes

  • Maintainer abandonment → mitigated by fork/vendor; low severity, low likelihood in the near term given the Nov 2024 release.
  • Pattern sprawl → formatters duplicating Resources; mitigated by the ADR and a "one presentation layer per surface" rule.
  • Hidden side effects → auth()/now()/config reads inside formatters producing non-deterministic output and flaky tests; mitigated by purity rules and injected clock/context.
  • N+1 regressions → detected only in load tests; mitigate with query-count assertions in the test suite.
  • Upgrade breakage on a future Laravel major → contained by pinning and the small surface area; the exit plan turns this into hours, not a project.

Ramp-up

  • Developer ramp-up: under an hour to read the package, half a day to internalize the convention and the purity rules. Include one worked example (model + formatter + resource) in onboarding docs.
  • TPM ramp-up: minimal — no new infrastructure, no on-call implications, no security surface. The decision is essentially a code-organization bet with a cheap reversal.
  • Overall recommendation posture: pilot, don't standardize yet. The technical risk is genuinely low, but the value is contingent on the codebase not already having a presentation layer. Run the one-model spike and the output-parity test; approve broad adoption only if it demonstrably reduces formatting duplication across the pilot models.
