Laravel Jqgrid Laravel Package

mgallegos/laravel-jqgrid

Getting Started

  • Install with Composer: composer require mgallegos/laravel-jqgrid. Pin the version and check its composer.json constraints first; this package predates modern Laravel releases and may not resolve cleanly on current Laravel/PHP versions.
  • Register the service provider and facade alias manually if auto-discovery is not available. For legacy Laravel apps this is usually Mgallegos\LaravelJqgrid\LaravelJqgridServiceProvider plus a JqGrid alias.
  • Publish package config/assets (php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Mgallegos\LaravelJqgrid\LaravelJqgridServiceProvider") and inspect config/jqgrid.php for wiring, route, encoder, and asset settings.
  • Look first at the README examples and the package src/ directory. Identify the repository contract used to feed rows, the encoder that produces jqGrid JSON, and the facade/config entry points. Copy the smallest working example before customizing.
  • First use case: a read-only admin grid for one Eloquent model. Create one repository class for the model, one controller action that returns the jqGrid JSON payload, and one Blade view that initializes jqGrid against that endpoint. Get pagination and sorting working before adding search, formatting, or inline actions.

Implementation Patterns

  • Use one repository per model or domain query. Keep the package-facing repository thin: accept jqGrid parameters, translate them into an Eloquent/query-builder query, and return rows plus total count.
  • Split the UI and data routes: a normal Blade route renders the grid shell, while a dedicated JSON route handles jqGrid’s AJAX requests. This makes the JSON endpoint easy to test with curl or a browser query string.
  • In the Blade view, initialize jqGrid with datatype: 'json', the JSON route URL, colModel, pager, rowNum, default sortname/sortorder, and jsonReader if the package response shape differs from jqGrid defaults.
  • Map jqGrid’s page, rows, sidx, sord, _search, and filters parameters explicitly. For search, parse the filters JSON into validated query scopes rather than passing request values directly into SQL.
  • Use eager loading and select only needed columns in the repository. Server-side grids fail fast when a “simple” grid triggers N+1 queries or counts a huge joined result set.
  • For complex filters, add custom query scopes or a specialized repository rather than bloating the controller. Keep the package adapter isolated so you can replace it later with a hand-written jqGrid JSON response if the package becomes unmaintainable.
  • Use jqGrid formatters and events for action links, edit/delete buttons, and row selection. Keep mutations on separate POST/PUT/DELETE routes with normal Laravel validation and authorization.
  • Reuse a base repository for common pagination/sorting behavior, then override filter handling per model. This reduces duplicated sidx/sord whitelisting and count logic.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Maintenance risk is the main gotcha. The last release is from 2019, the license is marked NOASSERTION, and jqGrid itself is a legacy jQuery plugin. Verify license terms and compatibility before production use; plan an exit path if the package cannot run on your Laravel version.
  • jqGrid request parameter names and JSON response shape are version-sensitive. The expected payload is typically { page, total, records, rows }, with each row containing an id and cell array. Confirm this against the package encoder and the frontend jqGrid version you load.
  • Always whitelist sortable columns for sidx and restrict sord to asc/desc. Treat filters as untrusted JSON and validate operators, fields, and values before applying them to a query.
  • Watch the count query. jqGrid needs records for paging, so large tables can become slow even when fetching only 20 rows. Index sort/filter columns and consider a capped or optimized count for very large datasets.
  • Dates, booleans, and formatted values can sort incorrectly if the database sorts raw values but jqGrid displays formatted strings. Decide whether sorting happens in SQL or client-side, and keep formatters consistent with that choice.
  • Ensure every row has a stable unique id. Composite primary keys need a synthetic ID; otherwise selection, editing, and refresh behavior will be unreliable.
  • Manage frontend assets deliberately. The package may not bundle a current jqGrid build, so pin jQuery/jqGrid CSS and JS yourself, or test compatibility with free-jqGrid/Guriddo forks.
  • Debug by hitting the JSON route directly with representative query strings, then inspect the raw response before blaming the frontend. Enable query logging temporarily to verify filters, sorting, limits, and offsets.
  • After changing package config, run php artisan config:clear and php artisan cache:clear. Config caching commonly hides published config changes.
  • Keep CSRF protection on mutation endpoints, but do not expect jqGrid’s GET-based data request to carry a CSRF token. Use Laravel’s standard web middleware for the Blade route and API-style handling only where appropriate.
  • Extension points to prefer: custom repository classes, custom encoders/response mapping, Blade partials for grid setup, and package config overrides. Avoid editing vendor files; fork or wrap the package if you need permanent changes.
